I'm 15 and I get sharp pains on the left side of my chest. But just on April 3rd, I got it through my chest and my arm, so severly, that I fell to the ground and could barely breath. And just before that happened, I had a headache and took an Ibuprofen, I don't know if the headache had anything to do with it, cause I still had it after the pain.
The other problems I've had, are blacking out, sometimes just at random times, and getting dizzy for no reason.
Now just yesterday, I was taken to the ER and they gave me a CT scan and this other thing where they stuck stickers on my chest and monitered my heart. But they said they didnt find anything, except that my cavity is irritated.
Too be honest, I think it's alot worse then what the doctors think. The pain was the worst pain I've ever felt. I really really want to find out if there is anything else you think I should be checked for, because to b honest, I'm kind of scared. I just really need help, cause I'm not really going to just let it go.

If you have any advice or ANYTHING, I would apprieciate it.
Thanks. :]

  • Hello. sorry to hear that you are having such a hard time-and so young too. Are you having any problems like rapid heartbeat? shortness of breath? Are you feeling depressed or anxious? I know that being a teenager can be very trying, depressing, frustrating and scary thing in itself. My stepdaughter suffered with anxiety attacks that made her feel like she was i a fog, gave her headaches and chest pains.. Sometimes its a simple fix, like low dose anxiety meds..I also suffer with anxiety and have learned that an anxiety attack can mimmick other health problems, including heart attack symptoms. Which can be very frightening. What were the doctors referring to about the cavity looks irratated? Your chest cavity? If so you should get a second opinion from a cardioligist. Just to be sure there isn't something serious going on. will look for your response... Becca318

  • I was going to say the same as Becca that it could be panic attacks - if you're stressed so you need to think about that. Has your doctor done blood tests? they show up most things and would help set your mind at rest. Having said that if you get more problems go back and get them to do an ecg. :)

  • I agree with what some of the previous posters have said...it sounds alot like a panic attack.I suffer from these at times too. There are times that they come about for no apparent reason and other times I worry and get so anxious about something that it will happen.I also went to the ER for chest pain and rapid heart beat recently. After extensive testing, my heart appeared to be normal and everything else looked fine. The Drs. just sent me home.I have researched panic attacks and alot of times people experience them and it is so scarey and painful that they actually believe they are going to die or that they are having a heart attack. It doesnt help that people who are prone to panic attacks are super anxious about everything...b/c then you start to think, "no, that can't be it, there has to be something else wrong with me, something really bad!"My trip to the ER was 2 months ago and although I really felt like something was seriously wrong with me at the time, I have come to terms with the fact that it was just a panic attack!I am sorry for your troubles.

  • Pain and discomfort in the distribution mentioned is most likely due to a phenomenon known as DaCosta's syndrome and is frequently observed in patients suffering from significant stress or anxiety. Since the ECG and scan were essentially negative, the results would tend to further support an underlying cause associated with anxiety and stress. It is extremely rare for a person of your young age to experience the symptoms of actual cardiovascular distress. The only condition that could remotely be associated with the symptoms described in such an instance would be Wolf Parkinson White syndrome, wherein chest discomfort and considerable pain is experienced on exertion. In such cases, however, the disorder is easily identified by stethoscope because a characteristic murmur is revealed. I doubt it's the case here because you would have experienced symptoms prior to the age of 15 and your doctor would have recognized the murmur if it were present. Syncope, or fainting, is also very common among persons with significant stress or anxiety and results from sudden changes in vagal tone. It's sort of similar to the effects that soldiers experience from standing at attention for extended periods. Nothing of your symptoms at this point suggests an underlying disease or process that could represent harm to you, so it's important to sort of take a breath and relax from that standpoint. It would, however, be important for you to work through your parents to help locate someone who can help determine to what extent anxiety is present and ways for you to bring it under control. You'll be fine. Best regards, J Cottle, MD

It could be something like postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (thou i dont know if that would give one chest pain that severe). But they said they didnt find anything, except that my cavity is irritated. i cant see how panic attacks could give irritation which can be seen on scans. You may have had some kind of viral infection (viral infections may affect the heart and cause inflammation/irritation) which caused all the issue, i hope you are better now......... I assume the following is okay to post now as it's now not going to scare the heck out of anyone but does show that sometimes viral infections affecting heart may be missed resulting in death even in young ones, this poor kid wasnt believed and now he's dead http://www.cfids-me.org/marys/cfsacf05.html

Sounds like anxiety. You are at an age where your menstual periods are changing and adjusting. Have you noticed a relation between your menstrual cycle and the time that you have your attacks? Perhaps you need a good thorough check-up from your pediatrician. If you have any advice or ANYTHING, I would apprieciate it.Thanks. :]I agree with JCottle.
