Hi,

Over the months I have posted here about my on going health or lack of it.

I have been to GI docs and am still not getting anywhere, same old story as a lot of people her I know, but the thought of starting a new year feeling like this and not eating, is awful.

A brief history.

For over a year I have been having the following symptoms.

Nausea, pretty much 24/7, acid reflux that burns my throat and on waking in the morning leaves a taste and film in my mouth. (Sorry to be so descriptive.)

I am unable to eat very much at all, and live mainly on ensure drinks, the reason I can not eat much is the nausea. The nausea is best described as feeling so I am going to be sick rather than feeling sick if that makes sense. At times I get a burning feeling low down in my stomach. I do not get heartburn as such, but do get the feeling of wanting to burp a lot after eating, but never bring up any wind if I try.

The most worrying aspect apart from not eating is weight loss. I lost about 10Kg between June and Sept this year, but now my weight has stabilized.

I was sent to a GI doctor and he concentrated on my upper GI, stomach etc. He ran many tests including upper GI camera, H.pylori, many bloods, liver and GB scan, all came back normal.

My question is does it sound so we need to look further down in the bowels, could it be bowel cancer, my GI doctor thinks not but I need a direction of where to look at next, as I am not improving.

My BMs are normal for me, once a day, I have not noticed any blood, but I will be honest I avoid looking be a male and coward.

I have no pain at all and most of the time feel fine.

IanJ

IanJ Has your DR given you any meds to help with the acid reflux? If he has please list them and if they are working. Also, with the nausea, ask for Phenegran ( Promethazine) it works great for nausea. You can also take other things like motion sickness pills or benadryl that may help. Has your DR checked for a hiatial hernia? ( sorry bout spelling) and I do not think your lower GI tract would cause the acid reflux BUT Im not a DR so I have no idea. Try some meds to help, you need to get it under control because that acid coming up all the time will eventually do damage. I do have one more question, are you or have you ever been a heavy drinker?ciaoA

He may also require the addition of a prokinetic such as domperidone if necessary.I have not taken any meds as yet because I feel that we do not know what we are treating, is there a serious underlying problem that needs attention, and will meds just make the symptoms better and not find out the cause. Would you suggest I take the meds?I had an upper GI camera about a month ago, and asked about a hiatial hernia then and the GI surgeon who did the test said no and also everything looked normal.I am not sure if it could be in my lower GI, my last colonoscopy was about 5-6 years ago, and at that time all was normal not even a polyp and I am not sure if it is true but colon cancer normally grow out of polyps and take many years to grow, up to ten, so hopefully it would have shown up then. Do you think I should ask for another colonoscopy?Being unable to eat and the acid reflux is bad, but I feel so well in myself, but a bit thin.No I have never been a drinker. Why do you ask? I was diagnosed with a fatty liver with raised ALT LFT but since the loss of weight this has returned to normal. Many thanks for tacking the time to reply,Ian

Many thanks for tacking the time to reply, Ian I do suggest you take something for the nausea, why suffer? If something is wrong with you they will find it. I think if you had cancer the DR's would have picked up on it via blood tests and the like. Im not sure of your age but a colonoscopy wont hurt if you want to get another one and your insurance will cover it. Im surprised your DR didnt give you any meds. It sounds like a pretty clean cut and dry case. take the meds, if you feel better than GREAT!!!! Keep following up with DR's, get the blood work ( ask for the results on on paper so you may get a 2nd opinion ) get the colonoscopy, do what you must to ease your mind. There is no reason to suffer and be miserable if you dont have to. Also, Im not a DR but from what you stated your symptoms are I do not think you have cancer. I think you have acid reflux and should take the meds your DR's think you should take. I asked about the drinknig because alcoholics usually have this problem. I do hope all works out for you, keep us posted and remember.... You are your biggest advocate, if you dont agree with the results of a test or the diagnosis get a 2nd opinion or a third.CiaoA

Why are you not taking them.....your acid problem is causing damage and it can be controlled if you take the Meds. The damage is probably advanced by now so don't expect miracles in a few days.Try the Meds. first for 2 weeks and see how you go from there.Gish

  • Actually, this sounds like something I had a couple of years ago. The nausea was overwhelming at times.... acid reflux, burning throat, loss of weight... I went to a gastroenterologist who did the scopes and such and put me on Prevacid for the stomach acid, which somewhat controlled the acid reflux but did nothing for the nausea. Six months later, after another visit to my family doctor, he sent me for tests for my gallbladder. That was the whole problem. I didn't have gallstones; but my gallbladder was only functioning at about 30%. After having surgery, my nausea disappeared! Have you had your gallbladder tested? I would look into having the test done to see how well your gallbladder is working... I no longer have nausea or acid reflux and I am off the Prevacid.

Anyway thank you for your advice. How is the GB tested. I did have an US of my GB which was normal and well defined, what other tests should I ask for?Now there is something I don't understand. When I have something wrong with me like a headache or tooth ache like I had yesterday the nausea vanishes, or if I find something to keep my mind occupied then I feel fine, or at least a lot better. If I have sex I all the nausea vanishes for hours. So what is going on here, be as candied as you want, if you think I have a mental problem I will not be offended, I know that the mind can be a very powerful thing, and it has made me very ill before.Thank you, Ian

It is new year eve and I really don't want to get stuck with this tonight. Any good idea would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

  • P.S.The thing I found was a little helpful but not much. They sayd that there is really no perfect cure for acid reflux. http://news.steadyhealth.com/Conditions-Treatments/no-perfect-cure-for-stomach-acid-reflux/Dear Ian and Clearsky,Acid reflux can have many causes/associations including Gastroparesis(delayed gastric emptying)Hiatus hernia,Bile(non acid) refluxEsophageal Crohn's diseaseAchlorhydria or hypochlorhydria(no stomach acid or low stomach acid)Esophageal strictureScleroderma Zollinger-Ellison syndromeHypercalcaemia(too high calcium levels)Zenker diverticulum The treatment will depend on whats causing it.For example you'll need a different treatment if you have too high stomach acid then if you have too low stomach acid.If you dont mind natural stuff, there are some natural things worth trying provided your not allergic to them. Some of these things have helped people with reflux but if you find it makes it worse them stop taking it immediately because then you need something different. Some are Apples/apple sauce,Aloe Vera Juice,Pickle Juice,Papaya Enzymes,Lemons,1 tablespoon yellow mustard,non-alcoholic beer.If you try one and it makes your reflux worse then stop immediately as some can make it worse, for example lemons are good for reflux caused by too little stomach acid but will make someone worse if their reflux is caused by too much stomach acid. Also,if your currently taking any medications, discuss with your doctor first if its ok to use any of these natural remedies too.I dont think it will be very worthwhile doing lower GI test but instead ask for that Gastric Emptying Scintigraphy test if you havn't already had it done.

  • I do think it may be in your head. You stated you have made yourself sick before.....what makes you think this is any different?? Not eating for 10 months is drastic!! You are obviously a disturbed person and I can not believe you are even still alive. You do realize that by starving yourself your body will eventually shut down. You also realize that drinking these ensure drinks are the same as eating.....so why dont they make you feel sick?? Why are you doing this to yourself? 10 months with no food is dangerous, you are a walking heart attack. You may fall asleep one night and not wake up. EAT SOMETHING and quit being a troll.

EAT SOMETHING and quit being a troll.Hi Unregistered and thank you for your reply,Yes you are right it is dramatic not eating for 10 months, tell me about it, life is ***l. You raised a few points so I will try to answer them. First off I want to eat, I have tried and made myself worse, and now even drinking ensure is difficult, it makes me feel very sick, and is even difficult to swallow and get down, I take a sip at a time. I now feel sick normally 24/7 before it was only when I eat.I have not dismissed the psychological element in all this, I feel sure it plays a part, in making things far worse. To that end I was refereed by my GP for a psychological evaluation at my local hospital, this I had a few weeks ago. After two hours the Dr said he saw no signs of me suffering from depression or anxiety, and it would not be appropriate or helpful to offer me any meds, he discharged me back to my GP, my GP was meant to contact me he said but like always silence from my GP.The other valid point you made was that I had made myself ill before, yes I had but this was very different. This happened many years ago when I was a lot younger and this time I showed all the signs of high anxiety. Fast pulse, high blood pressure, and I became bed-bound due to being very weak. This WAS anxiety. And then unlike now I eat well, didn't loose weight of feel sick.I would love to believe it was all in my head, but I very much doubt it.I wish I knew the answer, in fact I would give anything now to get my life back. I enjoy life, I have so many things I want to do but these are made difficult by the way I feel. I still work 10 hour a day so I have not given up and more importantly I love the work I do.Ian
