  • hag-What you are feeling sounds like adrenaline surge, caused by the initiation of a flight or fight response. While I can't say for certain, here's a theory-There was a traumatic experience in your past, likely early childhood, that happened while you were trying to sleep that scared you very very badly. Subconciously, the act of trying to fall asleep reminds you of that early event, and causes, to a lessened degree, your body to go haywire. The fact that anxiety and schizophrenia run in your family makes you more genetically susceptible to this sort of thing. The fact that to cure it you think pleasant thoughts also seems to verify the theory. Hope that helps.-Regards, Q

  • From what you say I understand that the anxiety follows the chills, so this sounds to me like sleep myoclonus witch is a normal thing, all of us have it while falling asleep but we usually forget about it. When u are very tired the myoclonic jerks can be more frequent and more powerful and your anxiety levels can be a bit high so u get a little scared and u don't fall asleep right away and u remember them the next morning. If the anxiety is prior to the chills then I agree it might be some sort of a panic attack.

  • Does it only happen when your trying to sleep? If so then maybe it is somehow related to a sleep disturbance or maybe your having seizures from your temporal lobe which are happening when your really tired.TLE can also cause scary feelingsHave you had a sleep deprived eeg done?
