how is foot numbness caused?

A few days ago, as I put on my shoes in A.M. my right foot,and lower right leg were numb.
I also had terrible pain in knee area and behind knee. Went to Chiropractor He put a massaging machine on leg and suggested wearing knee guards. Have another appt this sat.
Oct 3, 2009. Exactly one week ago I awoke with tenderness in right foot calf and numbness
in right foot. It cleared up and hasn't returned,after only one trearment,and five days.I am
baffled as to numbness now in right foot and pins and needles insude of right thigh. Could you help me understand this???? Thankl you so much
