Hi, Please help me - I really need a sensible honest advice!

I am male/26/normally healthy, nothing unusual healthwise

End of August: While being drunk and clearly very stupid I had unprotected(condom broke) sex with a *********e.
Prior to that was already very tired as I haven't slept much the night before as well.

Got home, had a shower and went to sleep, disgusted with myself, but still feeling healthy, but very tired. Before going to sleep felt foggy in the head, but presumed it to be due to drinking alcohol.

In about 2-3 hours (early morning) woke up, feeling like vomiting, waited a bit, realised I am somehow poisoned and induced vomiting 3 times to clear my stomach.
Went to sleep - woke up 2-3 hours later feeling exhausted. Didn't take it seriously, thought that I simply drunk too much. My appetite despite an empty stomach was at zero.
Couldn't make myself eat to eat a decent meal after this for 4-5days! only bread and a lot of water. When I did try eating - I could swallow - it hurt. The top of the troat felt a bit sore, although nothing visible - used mouth rinse liquid and it went away in two days. During these 4-5 days I was very tired, was waking up all sweaty, went to the doctor and he assumed I had gastroentiritis.

1 week after exposer:
weaknes still didn't go away despite starting to eat properly. Appetite improved, but still low.

2-2.5 weeks after exposure:
Feeling and eating a bit better, but still weak.
The tip of my penis and some skin around it(uncircumsized) became red in places (total area about a half), but no pain. The shape if the red patches was random, not round. Went to doctor, he said it's Balanitis ("possibly fungal-like") and prescibed some cream (Decoderm)
It worked - penis skin became normal the next day.
In addition I had a slight weird feeling (not pain) in the groin area as if I had something spreading underneath. But not localized - more like slight warm feeling around the whole genital area.

3 week after exposure:
Appetite almost fully back. Still very tired - had about 1/4 of energy compare to normal self.
Woke up with bearable, but strong pain in the left testicle. Warm feeling around the groin did not go away, but the pain overshadows it.
1 day later the strong pain went away, but instead it became the mild pain, which was activated when touch ar pressing it. The epicenter of this pain seemed to come from epedimittis. Went doctor - he sent me to Emergency Hospital to see urologist.
They did blood and urine test - both "negative for infection, also not cancer". Also did ultrasound on testicles and groin area and found nothing apart from "some Hydrocelle" in the rigth testicle (but the pain was in the left one!)
They concluded that I simply feel my lymph nodes after gastroentiritis and prescribed Megacillin Oral "to help battle the remains of the infection".

5 weeks after exposure:
after finishing 1 week course of abovementioned antibiotics I felt much better generally - energy was almost fully back, testicular pain almost gone, but not completely.
Had runny nose for two days only, no sore throat at all.
Went to STI specialist doctor they took chlamidia (urine culture) and other non-gonococcal (urine culture) and gonorrhea (swab) tests and just in case prescribed Doxycycline 200mg per day, which I take upto now. All the tests turned out negative.

Yesterday did a blood test for HIV and Syphilis - should be back within a week.

Last two days I had increased lymph node activity: some uneasy feeling - almost like pain in the lymph nodes. The position is not premanent - keeps changing between left testicle, below rigth ear, left arm elbow(rare), right leg below knee, under the chin (but not throat).
Never all nodes at the same time, instead just one at a time, changing every three-four hours.

Right now my right leg (all of it below knee) feels like I kept it cold for some time and there's an annoying feeling about it and even some pain. This goes if i hold it up for some time.

Few additional points:
Since exposure I never had any temperature above 36.6 C
Lymph nodes/glands have never been enlarged, just weird feeling
Doing any sport activity COMPLETELY gets rid of all lymph nodes symptoms plus the head is clearer, but about an hour or two after everything is back.
Foggy feeling in the head remained with me all the time during the first month after exposure. Now it seems to be gone or maybe I've just got used to it.

PLEASE ANYBODY GIVE ME AN ADVICE ON WHAT THIS COULD BE?
DOES IT SOUND LIKE HIV? OR ANY OTHER STI ?
COULD IT BE ANYTHING ELSE?
I AM SURE HOWEVER THAT THIS IS SOMEHOW LINKED TO THE UNPROTECTED SEX INCIDENT

ANY COMMENT WOULD BE HELPFULL
THANKS VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE

  • Okay, exposure to HIV is asymptomatic for several years, not several hours and it's not as easily contracted as you might believe. It's obvious from the description that a hygiene issue was involved in the enounter and balanitis is somewhat more common among uncircumcised men, if that's indeed the case here. There are several organisms which can result in the condition as well. I think several factors are responsible for your post-encounter syndrome, not the least of which had to do with substantial alcohol intake, together with exposure to a viral pathogen more akin to the flu than HIV. HIV is an extremely slow-moving virus and only after a tremendous latency period, again often years rather than hours, does the virus cause the T4 helper cells to diminish which depresses the immune system, allowing opportunistic pathogens to invade the body. This stage of the disease is known as AIDS and it is the consequence of the depressed immune system which results in multiple complications. Newly developed treatments can now, however, keep the body free from the effects of the virus to the extent that many patients are living normal lives once again. Its' highly doubtful that your test results will reveal anything positive and it goes without saying that unprotected sex in this day and age, particularly with strangers, can potentially result in very undesirable consequences. Unless I'm mistaken your symptoms will likely continue to abate and you'll soon be feeling normal once again. If, however, your symptoms remain for more than 2 weeks, then I'd suggest that you return to your primary care doctor for follow-up and/or re-evaluation. Best regards, J Cottle, MD

  • My response would be that if you have HIV, you must have already had it from a previous experience because it is not possible to have symptoms after a few hours. Also, you're chances of getting it from unprotected vaginal intercourse are very low. I think it's 1 in 200,000. But I would avoid prostitutes at all costs and for god's sake, use a condom next time so you don't have to go through this again.

  • from post starter:thanks to both of you for your advise. Indeed my symptoms have improved and I feel almost perfect for about 5-6 days now.The only symptoms remaining are: left testicle and groin lymph node above it. (not enlarged, but painful if I press on it. The pain comes few seconds (5-8) after I press). However if I don't touch it I don't feel anything at all.Still a bit below par energywise, but getting better. What could possibly explain the lymph nodes symptoms?HIV/Syph blood tests are back tomorrowThanks

Need to redo HIV test at some point as the first one was only 6weeks after.the throat is sore, or more precisely is just feeling weird, maybe from lymph nodes or from some bacteriaCould this be some troat/body based bacteria all the time?and lymph nodes are just an indicator of infection?notice this characteristics: coffee allways makes me feel pain around my prostata.Beer helps. Nervous system seems to be affected and it not that i am panicing or smth, it really is. Neck is also painful. Spasms in muscles are not over. Weird skin problem on the inside of my nostrils. Skin as if was scratched and cannot heal for some time, not all of it, just bits, but still very annoying. Will go see the doctor again. About time to even stay in the hospital as cannot fuction any more.My girlfriend has some weird patch of 1cm diameter of very dry skin between the thumb and the pointing finger on the outer side of her hand. • I'm not a doctor so take my advice for what it is. I am however pursuing an MD so maybe one day I will be able to call myself a doctor. And on another note...I've been there! As Dr. Cottle said, your symptoms are not a result of HIV. That said, unprotected sex will increase your chances of contracting an STD. So while the symptoms are not from HIV please be sure to get tested and do follow up testing for all STDs. Of course some are easier to rule out because they present visible signs (note symptom is what a person feels or thinks, signs are measurable or observable indications). Please protect yourself and your girlfriend by making sure you protect yourself during sex until your doctor gives you the OK. Now please take this next piece of advice to heart as its very important for you at this point. Please, take a deep breath and relax. Do not worry about the possible test results. All STDs are highly treatable as long as you catch them on time which you have! So give yourself a pat on the back for doing the right thing and continue staying healthy. All of what you have described are symptoms of your increased anxiety after this incident. Its the brains way of focusing attention to monitory the body for any changes but do not let it overwhelm you. Also, its winter and dry/cold weather can make the skin do all sorts of silly things. Remember, you are in control of your brain and you are doing the right thing so do not worry. Take care of yourself and be sure to follow up but most importantly take a deep breath and relax! You'll pull through this scary and confusing time!Cheers,Dthis is the original thread starter.still having problems, by now complitely exasted no energy at all, tired so much that sometimes the hands start shaking.ALL tests were negative so far.
