After a trip to China last summer, my father-in-law has been getting high fever and unbelieveable joint pain about every three weeks, for about 3-4 days at a time. By the time he's well again, it strikes again. Doctors have been unable so far to diagnose it. It's accompanied by diarrhea and vomitting, cellulitis (hot hardeneing of the tissue on the upper arm) and a red spotty rash, appearing in different places, - ankles, upper arms. Any ideas?

  • He was under quarantine at first, but they took him out. He's since been in the hospital several times to no avail. I guess that's why I'm here. Now they just treat it like a fever (of unknown origin), give him some pain killers and send him on his way. Pretty frustrating, as you can imagine. We're at the point now where we have to start considering other options/sources.

  • I just started searching the web to find out what the ***l is wrong with me. Since I got back from my honeymoon in Hawaii, I have been stricken with an illness every two to three weeks. It starts out with a sudden high fever and chills. Then comes the severe joint and muscle pain and headache. Toward the end of the cycle I end up vomiting and a rash appears on my face. Then the fever breaks and I fall asleep. I hate seeing my wife cry over me and the doctors cannot find any source to the infection. If you find out what is wrong with your Dad, please let me know.

Any ideas?http://www3.baylor.edu/~Charles_Kemp/musculoskeletal.htmThis website lists diseases which are contracted in world-wide.Here's one example:Relapsing fevers (Louse-borne relapsing fever is a public health problem primarily in the highlands of Ethiopia; while tick-borne relapsing fever has a much wider distribution): RFs are spirochetal infections with Borrelia sp. (gram negative helical bacteria) and are characterized by recurrent episodes of fever and apyrexia. Manifestations of both LBRF and TBRF are sudden-onset of fever, chills, headache, tachycardia, nausea and vomiting, arthralgia, myalgias, and petechial rashes. Hepatosplenomegaly is common and confusion may occur. Conjunctival injection, epistaxis, cough, and slight hemoptysis may also occur. Symptoms last for 3-10 days, when there is a crisis (>fever and severity of other symptoms), followed by recovery and relapse in about 7-14 days. There are one to two relapses in untreated LBRF and three to ten relapses in untreated TBRF. LBRF is treated with a single dose of oral erythromycin, tetracycline, doxycycline or chloramphenicol; or single parenteral dose of the preceding medications or penicillin G. TBRF is treated with a seven day course of the same medications. Jarisch-Herxheimer reactions to treatment are common (acute febrile reaction with headache and myalgia). The home website is:http://www3.baylor.edu/~Charles_Kemp/Infectious_Disease.htmYou can search by symptoms or diseases are they are links to other infectious disease websites. You can also search by area of the world.http://www3.baylor.edu/~Charles_Kemp/asia.htmAsiaI'd suggest printing off the information and handing it to a doctor along with the website address.

  • I would consult a Chinese doctor with diagnostic experience in China; he/she might be better able to identify the disease. As the problems are cyclical, I would also check for parasites.

Any ideas? My son had returned from a trip to Shanghai with similar symptoms. After months of testing they found nothing. However, I found this Chikungunya virus information online and think this is the culprit:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ChikungunyaPlease let me know if you find anything concrete:Timbo20440@yahoo.com
