I have very irritable skin round my groin and sides and top of thigh left side. Makes wearing clothes extremely uncomfortable. Also liver pain on the left side. I was diagnosed as herpes almost 35yrs ago. The last time I had these symptoms was about 19yrs ago. Please help.

  • Well, irritable skin in of itself does not suggest an outbreak of a herpatic lesion and upper left quadrant pain is typically not a symptom of liver problems or genital herpes. If you are referring to pain that is located on the inner, or medial side of the right quadrant, this would likely be more associated with cholestitis or gall bladder disease, possible duodenal ulcer, but liver pain would be less likely. Certain classes of hepatitis can cause cirrhosis and swelling of the liver and cause the abdomen to become distended with ascites if severe enough, but herpes tends to gravitate and remain present in the ganglion nerve root complex and expresses itself in a relapsing remitting type of presenation. The lesions are represented by small patches of vescicles (fluid-filled bumps) with circumferential red rash and the area is usually very painful to the touch, sometimes with parasthesia of the surrounding tissues, and is located on or directly proximal to the genital area in most all cases. The lesions can last from several days to a week and patients often experience a prodrome of fatigue and or flu-like symptoms several days or so before the appearance of the lesions. It is entirely possible for herpes to remain dormant for many years before expressing itself once again. I would suggest that you be evaluated directly by your primary care physician to determine the precise nature of the rash. The internet is a very poor source for obtaining any type of medical diagnosis and is reckless at best. Best regards, J Cottle, MD
