Is it possible to get oral thrush or white coating on the tongue from Othodontic Appliances such as a retainer?

  • In short: No. Oral thrush is an overgrowth of the fungus in your mouth that a healthy immune system would normally regulate. If you truly have a fungal infection, it can be a sign of an immune problem, or even HIV. Chances are, though, that what you have is just bacterial overgrowth on your tongue from not cleaning your mouth properly. Why do you think you have thrush? Have you been to a dentist to confirm it?

  • I disagree. If you have a large enough colony of yeast it will grow even in a healthy individual. Try listerine. It will hurt like heck, but it cleared my last case. Some of us are just more susceptable to yeast. Another thing that helps is cutting down on sugar or eating something salty after something sugary. The sugar promotes growth and salt kills of some of it. If it persists inspite of the listerine then see your orthodontist. There are other diseases that can increase the likelyhood of thrush or that look a lot like thrush.Good luck and keep wearing your retainer---I have braces too and the one thing I keep hearing is "I wish I had worn my retainer so my teeth didn't move back."

  • Try rinsing the mouth with diluted Betadine:1ml betadine solution, diluted to 10ml with warm waterrinse for 1 minute, 4 times a day
