Hi, I'm a 31 year old male, with a bowel problem thats driving me crazy. I'll do my best to describe my symptoms.

I have constant clay coloured very soft foul smelling stools with a lot of gas. It is not uncommon for me to have 10 or more of these bowel movements per day. The stools are small and very soft, normaly breaking up in the water. Sometimes it looks like a spoungey mass floating in the toilet.

About 30 minutes after eating, I have an urgent need to go to the tiolet- again soft and foul smelling. It dosn't seem to matter what i eat.

Sometimes i have some sort of leakage or discharge from my rectum, it smells (and feels) like i havn't wiped myself properly and is embarrising. In my underwear its brown/yellow in colour (and stinks). This normally happens after i've been to the bathroom and cleaned myself.

Also, sometime i need to use heaps of tiolet paper to clean myself.

I've had these symptoms for several years. I've had all sorts of tests, including a colonoscopy, and everything keeps coming back normal, when clearly it isn't! I've also had a steady weight gain since these symptoms started.

Has anyone else got this combination of symptoms? Any suggestions to help?

  • Look up clay-colored stool. Somewhere south of your gall bladder, there might be a blockage. Common bile duct obstruction maybe, or, you are not processing your food correctly which would be a malabsorption issue. See your doc. They should do a fecal test also to rule out parasites and see if there is too much fat in your stool.

  • I have similar symptoms and it drives me crazy. I get "raw" from wiping so much because it is hard to get myself clean also. It seems as though it has an oily consistency that won't completely wipe off. I've also noticed that the stools seem to float. I have looked up information on fatty stools and I have also had my gall bladder removed - about 9 years ago, this problem is fairly current - within the last year or so and is very frustrating. Have you found out anything yet?

  • I'm using a product called "bowelbiotics" made by lifestream. It seems to be doing the trick so far. I had my first normal/solid bowel movement in years...and have had no problems since. Not sure what will happen if I stop using this product, but I'm happy for now.:):)

  • Hi! I am an RN....and a present survivor of chronic Hep C....I have had the disease for over ten years...and ALL the symptoms you have described sound like hepatic symptoms ....(liver) Clay colored stools happen when our bilirubin is not reaching our intestines.....usually stool is brown, and should be firm enough to sink and stay in one form. I have had every symptom you are describing.....But, before you freak out, Hep C is NOT just a disease of IV drug addicts. I am not, nor ever have been , yet I was diagnosed with the disease after seeing a gastroenterologist.(and we came to the conclusion that maybe I acquired the disease from another patient?) Ask your MD to do a liver panel and bilirubin on you, along with a pro-time. (Clotting factor) Is your urine EVER dark like tea? Have you had unexplained weight loss? Do you feel full after eating a small meal? My suggestion is to make an appt with a gastro MD...and make sure you give a FULL and HONEST history....doctors can run every test in the world, but much of ANY diagnosis comes from a thorough medical history. Describe ALL symptoms...and how long they have been going on. I am rooting for you.....and as 'unmanly' as this may seem, you may want to invest in some panty liners for your undies, yet put it under your anus...that way, you can change them and not worry about the residual odor. Good luck, and PLEASE let me know what happens. Write me back if you can. I have some other ideas, too. Fondly, Hep C Survivor:)

  • Hello~ I am an RN, and also a chronic Hep C survivor....Your symptom of clay clored, foul smelling, floating stools sound ALL too familar to me. Clay colored stools detect a problem with your bilirubin...(the stuff that makes stool brown) Have you ever had a FULL liver panel ? ALT, AST, Bilirubin and Prothrombin time??? If ANY of these levels are above the norm, you might have been exposed to the HEP C virus...as in you have been exposed and Hep C antibodies are present. But! Before you freak out, let me assure you that Hep A, B, and C diagnosis is NOT necessarily because of IV drug addiction or chronic alcoholism. I am neither, yet still was exposed to the antibodies of Hep C 7 years ago. I am assuming I picked it up from a needle puncture wound while working in the hospital...but who knows? The important thing is, you say that you have been GAINING weight....and usually weight LOSS is associated with Hepatitis. Is your urine EVER dark , like the color of tea? Do you feel extremely full after a small meal?Have you had your gallbladder removed , or ever been told you have gallstones? Do you have intermittent pain in your upper right quadrant of your abdomen? My suggestion is to yest out a LOW FAT diet, and make a new appt with a GI M.D. Best of luck to you, and please reply to my post. Bowel problems are NO fun....

  • It may be your bacterial flora that it`s causing these soft smelly stools.I would consider a purification of the colon and the small intestin.Try fresh fruits and celery juices combined with little solid food, mainly vegetables and coffeine clismas every 2-nd day, treatment duration 7 days

  • I am so glad to hear that your bowel movements are getting better! What a relief, huh? Best of luck to you....and although I have tried the exact same thing for my similar bowel problems, I have YET to find anything that works.....but, I always have hope. I have been labeled "Mystery Diagnosis" patient by more than a few doctors......very frustrating.....especially since i have extensive medical training and education.....Nurses and doctors always make the worst patients...we know TOO much, and our minds wander to some pretty bleak places in the diagnosis department...thank goodness for sites like this! In good health and spirit, Hep C Survivor

  • I have similar symptoms, but I never gain or lose weight. My stools are always funny shapes and even narrow-commonly breaking apartand not solid. I get that discharge too-that's the worst, for almost 10 years. I've been seeing docs for abdominal pain and have had cat scans, ultrasound, endoscopy and colonoscopy (the latter two most recently-doc said everything was fine). They did a biopsy to see if I have trouble digesting gluten-I was hoping thatwould be it (no result yet). I also have psoriasis which the doctor said weakens my immune system-rssulting in fungal infections. I thought that maybe it wasn't dischargebut a skin problem as I have chronic skin trouble in that area as well as chronic ear infection.

  • I had these same symptoms. It was Candida Albicans in my case. I've treated it and recovered, then relapsed a little bit a couple times. If it's Candida in your case too, it's something you will have to control by a proper diet the rest of your life. I did go a natural remedy route and didn't treat with the typical drugs they prescribe, which attack your liver.
