I had written a post before and got some replies on it but I thought I would try again. Sorry so long. Any help is appreciated!

It started in Nov 07 with my daughter having stomach twitches. The neurologist diagnosed it as tics. They weren't really bothering her so he said to keep an eye on them and no medication was given. She explains it as a silent hicup that never goes away. They are constant all the time unless she is sleeping.

In feb she started to complain of a stomachache. When I took her to the doctor, she had lost 27 lbs since Nov. She sent us straight to the ER and they did tons of tests like exrays, cat scans, blood work. Everything was negative so they sent us home and told us to follow up with gastro. One week later, she was admitted to hospital for being malnourished. More tests and everything was negative. One doctor said she just needs to eat to build her stomach up again. They put her on Reglan. I have since questioned the side effects but the doctor brushes me off about it.

I am going to post this and continue on the next post because I got timed out and had to start over again.

  • So since Feb, she has gained/lost a lb or two here and there but pretty much stayed the same. She claims she wants to eat and is not trying to lose weight on purpose. About April-May, she started to get sad/angry for no apparent reason. The psychtrist put her on Prozac. Again, I worry about side effects. However, the Prozac has helped with mood. These days, she is eating more than what she was a couple of months ago. But still not enough. Again she claims she wants to eat but can't or she will eat but then be in pain after. She also says it hurts to drink anything even water. Her current symptoms are tiredness, constipation, dizziness and headaches sometimes, and stomach pain. Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions? Thanks so much!

  • If she hasn't had a gastro workup, she needs to have one.

  • So sorry for you - 11 years old. My own 18yr old has been suffering from anxiety/panic disorder since about 8 yrs so I understand the frustration with no real diagnosis.I've often wondered if anorexia begins with the symptoms you describe - that it begins with physical symptoms first. (rather than mental) Not that this opinion helps. I would make sure every single drop of food that goes into her is high quality. there's plenty of information out there about what is high quality and what is not. Since she's eating so little - every bit will count. As an aside - a person I know suffered from continuous hiccups (3 weeks or something ghastly like that) - his liver was swollen which was causing this)

  • Thanks for the replies! Yes, docs have done complete gastro work up and they have told me it is not anything gastro. It is wierd because some of the info i have read on anxiety/panic attacks does not fit my daughter...she will go to the store, outside, etc. I thought I remember reading that sometimes one will not go certain places or get really nervous about going places. She doesn't seem worried/scared about anyone or anything. Well except for doctors, she thinks they dont' know what they are talking about. It is really difficult to deal with as a mother because I feel completely helpless...we have tried many docs and they all seem not to know. Even the therapist doesn't think it is mental...i am very confused because i think well it has to be either pysical or mental...one or the other, right?? Right and I agree with the anorexia side of it...i do worry about that. My daughter swears she is not trying to lose weight on purpose but she could be in denial or not even realize it..... Something wrong with the liver...would show up on cat scan right?

  • Another thought-- has she been looked at for celiac disease?

  • I agree with aquila. Check celiac. But they may need endoscopy or genetic test. Also recommend seeing endocrynologist, metabolic specialist or neurologist. By the way children can manifest migraines in their stomach. I did and I also have a metabolic disorder that affect my eating. What type of food is your daughter eating? What makes her ill?

  • Your poor daughter ... it sounds like a physical issue rather than a mental one. Doctors DO often miss physical disorders or just lack enough info on the body to diagnose exactly what is going on. People with anorexia have an underlying mental issue why they dont eat eg many of them do it to feel in control of their lives but after a while a distorted body image takes over. Anorexia isnt a physical illness but caused by mental thought processes. She doesn't seem worried/scared about anyone or anything. Well except for doctors, she thinks they dont' know what they are talking about. nods.. she probably has a point there esp if they are believing she has an eatting disorder and she knows herself that that isnt the issue (if she truely is wanting to be able to eat more). About April-May, she started to get sad/angry for no apparent reason. The psychtrist put her on Prozac. Again, I worry about side effects. However, the Prozac has helped with mood. some physical illnesses can lead to mood disorders.................... Not being believed by doctors can lead to situational depression (this is common in illnesses where the person who IS physically sick, isnt believed at first). keep searching for diagnoses which really does fit your daughter.

  • thank you again for your replies...i checked out the links. yes she was checked for celiacs, it was negative. docs claim it is nothing gastro as they said they checked for everything-all work up was negative. neuro docs claim her stomach is a stomach tic but shouldn't be affecting her lack of appetite therapists, pscyh docs are not really sure...therapists first reaction was to get another medical opinion but my daughter is sooo sick of docs...we are kind of just going day by day and giving the medical part a break (i really want to get another opinion too but i am kind of waiting on my daughter). we are still seeing the therapist/psychiatrist she claims she wants to eat but her stomach hurts. it doesn't matter if she drinks water, eats pizza, ice cream, etc...she says it all hurts the same...

  • I am allergic to Reglan. When they gave it to me I was a wreck. So if she has side effects after taking that, she may be allergic. If its not helping why take it anyway.I also have dealt with the situational depression of doctors not believing or constantly being wrong. It's an empty feeling when you hurt and you feel like no one can save you. Religion helped me with that.Lastly, I have to ask.. does she have decent friends? Could it be drugs? Does she have access to any narcotic pain meds or anything? ("tiredness, dizziness, constipation, headaches, stomach aches") could all be caused by drug abuse. I know she's 11 but kids have started younger than that.Hope u find answers.
