I have a 2 year old son. We played outside all day on monday, later that evening after he went to bed he woke up at 11:00pm and was screaming. His entire right side was swollen, his face, tongue, hand, and foot. It was also accompained by a rash that is red and flat. at first it was splotchy but now it seems to be covering him. Then the next day I had him outside for only 10 min. and his lip started to swell on one side again. All the doctors say they have no idea what caused it, exspecially the swelling on one side. Nothing is new in the house. no soaps, detergents,clothes,toys.........nothing. He says it itches sometimes but then others it doesn't bother him at all. I really need to find out what this is. Please let me know if you have any ideas.

  • Could he have laid in something on just the one side? Do you have ant hills that he may have gotten into?

  • sounds like someone put down pesticides outside and he rolls around in it.. if that were true not only one side of him would be covered. kids have random rashes at young ages for no reason. i remember when i was a kid i had rashes almsot everyday. i didnt and dont have allergies. dont make a big fuss about it unless he starts showing more symptoms.

  • Is the side that gets red being exposed to more sun than other? Meaning is he sitting in one place for a time getting the most exposure on the side that has swelling or rash? I think there is a kind of allergy to sun (don't mean sunburn) or some people just have to have sunscreen depending sensitivity. Or like previous poster said, maybe he laid down on treated grass on one side only & that side was effected?

  • You need to take him to an allergist. The swelling you describe can result from even such a simple thing as being exposed to cold or sunlight. I don't want to scare you, but it's really important that you make an appointment because the swelling could happen in his throat, and he may need an epi-pen if it becomes an emergency. Best wishes!

There is always a reason for a rash in children. A rash on the outside indicates a rash on the inside in many cases, unless it's contact allergens, such as rolling in polluted grass.
