Over the past few months I have been getting a significant ammount of pitch black, thick, wiry/coarse hairs on my scalp. The majority of my hair is dark-ish brown, each hair is of average thickness and they are smooth. (This is occurring on my scalp only).

NOTE: They may have been there for up to a few years, because I had hair that was about 30 inches long up until a few months ago when I got a haircut, perhaps the haircut revealed them, perhaps they were new growth...I can't say.

I'm an 18 year old male, who takes no medication and I've searched extensively, but have no clue what could be causing my problem! To make this all worse, I have OCD and I'm getting to the stage where I desperately need to know why, and how to stop these hairs growing.

If you could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it greatly :).

  • Apologies for neglecting to put this in my initial post, but I am Caucasian...I figured it would be useful to add this, somehow.

  • I am a 43 yo female, and like you I have OCD. My hair texture has changed, though I don't have the wiry hair you describe (yet anyway), though I occasionally pull one or two wiry strands from my scalp on occasion. My hair does feel rather coarse though and heavy, not light like it used to feel. Though very coarse, when I sweat, I tend to sweat waxy substances all over my hair. I can't even describe it as oil - it feels like wax. Also, thankyou for your reply :).

  • I am not sure about the thyroid...possible, but usually with thyroid problems, you will be experiencing a lot of uncomfortable symptoms...tiredness being one of the typical ones and problems with weight either up or down and many others....but getting your thyroid tested is a few simple blood tests: FT4, FT3 and TSH and the antibodies for Graves Disease and Hashimotos disease...pituitary problem may also be an idea....do you have any other symptoms besides the hair problem...? .....Not sure but you may want to look into other hormonal problems.....that might cause hair problems....testosterone(?) .....talk to a GP and try to arrange a bit of blood work....

  • Also with thyroid the problem tends to be with loss of hair, not wiry hair.

  • I was just searching online for symptoms like this and came across your post, i've noticed this happening to me as well. I too have dark brown hair and have had black coarser strands in my hair...The thing that really got me though is that I also have ocd...a thought occurred to me that it could be the medication i was taking, if you think about it your hair is one of the things they check for in toxicology reports, your hair keeps a record of almost everything that goes into your body...are you on medication for your ocd?
