I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ukraine. While abroad, all of my hair began to break off. All of my hair broke off about four inches from the roots. I saw the PCV doctor and she told me that it was probably just heavy metals in my water supply. I should wash my hair less often.
I did, but to no avail. Then I started suffering from a massively itchy scalp with occasional red bumps, and still couldn't grow my hair back. The doctor told me it was the bad water again.
I ended up coming back to the states early and pretending that I got a new haircut. Well, the really crappy part is that it's been six months. My hair is still breaking and my scalp still drives me nuts, so I'm fairly sure it is not the water.
I'm really worried that I picked up some sort of skin parasite like scabies or head lice. I looked for and could not find any bugs, but I'm also too humilated to have anyone look for me. I slept on a lot of public trains and had a disgusting host family whose cat had fleas and who knows what else (in the end I left their house and got my own place but for a good month I was covered in flea bites).
I've been trying to be tough about it but I'm really humilated that I may have some sort of parasite from that cat. Any ideas???
