Our family went on vacation to Montana in July, last I checked that is in the USA...

My wife and I have had problems ever since. She has had steady diarrhea, while I've had intermittent diarrhea and I know my bowels are just 'not right). It smells different (sour in my case) plus after flushing, there's small brown flakes floating on the surface of the water after the toilet re-fills...

She has had anti-biotics 4-times, me 3... Golden-Seal capsules once. Para-gone for me... She was tested for giardia, neg. result. I didn't bother... I don't believe in the test after she had one...

I know something is wrong, and the next test is a colonoscopy, but they tell me giardia won't be tested for at that time... They can look for 'inflammation'. What happens if they find inflammation, they tell me 'IBS' ???

Help ??!!

What happens if they find inflammation, they tell me 'IBS' ??? Help ??!! I hope this will help prior to your colonoscopy. First of all IBS tends to be a catch all when doctors cannot explain bowel problems. Frankly, excessive diarrhea is not typical of this condition. Intermittent diarrhea and constipation together with left-sided abdominal pain is more typical. There is a very good medical reference book called the Merck Reference Manual, which I use all of the time, and which has a good section on the intestines, and which you may find helpful. As for treatment, most doctors suggest increasing the amount of fibre in the diet through whole grains, fruit and vegetables, bran etc. Also, you may want to try probiotic yoghurt which helps some people. One interesting thing. Sometimes, people who take too much fibre or bran can sometimew excrete it with the the effect of it floating on the surface when you evacuate your bowels. This can also cause symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. My suggestion prior to any medication or procedures would be to see which are you - a too much or too little fibre person, and adjust accordingly for a few weeks and see if that helps. Check with your physician first in case you have any allergies. Good luck!
