I am a 31 year old female who has until now been in good health. This is the problem. Monday started out with mild pain and swelling on right side of stomach or abdomen. Went to ER and within 3-4 hours pain was bad enough for morphine and swelling made me look like I was 5-6 months pregnant. The doctor did a ct scan and I immediatly went into emergency exploratory surgery because they could see alot of fluid inside my abdomen, tissues, muscle, etc. They drained fluid on Monday but it came right back and they have never drained it again. I still look 5-6 months pregnant. Dr's said bloodwork was done to check liver and nothing looked out of ordinary. I am still in pain but it is not horrible. Everything is swollen: abdomen, pelvic area, groin area. I have not been able to have a bowel movement in 3 days and I physically have to hold myself open to urinate. The dr's discharged me from the hospital today with some medication for pain and an anti-inflamatory and something to make my bowels move. Literally these were their words: "I have no idea what is wrong. I have never seen anything like this before. Hopefully it will get better on its own. Come back for a follow up on Monday." Needless to say I am very scared and frustrated. Because of where I live, it is absolutely impossible to go somewhere else for a 2nd opinion. I have tried to google the symptoms and the possibilities are making my head spin. Any ideas or suggestions?

  • Ascites (fluid in the abdomen) is typically caused by liver disease. Disorders that may be associated with ascites include:CirrhosisHepatitisPortal vein thrombosis (clots in the veins of the liver)Constrictive pericarditisCongestive heart failureLiver cancerOvarian cancerProtein-losing enteropathyNephrotic syndromePancreatitisThe CT should have eliminated cirrhosis, thrombosis and the cancers. Don't know if they scanned the pancreas. Maybe the heart suggestions need to be looked at.
