I am writing this on behalf of my father who is in his mid 50's, as his symptoms are now progressively worse everyday... Five months ago he started with the following symptoms, sinus congestion, fever above 104, night sweats, slurred speech, bloating, and headaches. After going to the ER he was admitted lab work that showed abnormal where elevated WBS and decreased kidney function, in consult with many Dr's they decided to remove his gallbladder.
Immediately following the surgery his symptoms where as follows, in addition to above symptoms, extreme calf pain, tingling in his Rt toes, and eventually Rt thumb, decreased appetite, fever, weakness, constipation, sleeping +++, unsteady gait, weight loss 20 lbs in 3 weeks, decreased BP (previous Hx of hypertension), A specialist though he had pneumonia which in turn after further investigation was asbestos in his lungs from years ago, lung biopsy negative) as a few days past the numbness in his feet was also now in the Lt foot and Lt thumb, to make a long story short if he is not on pain meds the pain in his legs and hands is not tolerable, he has went from leading a normal life to unable to work, barely walk and complete ADL's without my mom's assistance. He has spent numerous days in the hospital, yet because he is a easy going guy who fails to say what’s bothering him he is now at home, suffering.
In the past week, abnormal lab values include ESR greater than 110, elevated WBC, low IRON, symptoms remain the same but also include weight loss of 37 lbs total, sleeping 18+ hours daily, depression, sweating day or night +++, temp ranging from 95 - 104, entire feet and hands numb and on both feet toes curling under except big toe,
Today he takes pain meds - oxycodone 40 mg twice daily and high doses of prednisone - 70mg daily, with no effect, calf pain remains extreme and toes curling under even more. He is to go monthly for IV immune boost therapy, but not till Dec.
He has seen a cardiologist (for heart murmur), internist, respiratory, neurology specialists and they don't have a clue, many tests have come back negative, including bone marrow biopsy. He is waiting to see an infectious disease specialist. Pending test results various cardiac, INR, creatinine, CBC ect. a lot of repeat tests to keep up monitoring, he is also to go for further heart monitoring.
My dad has a Hx of sleep apnea, while in hospital he discovered that with oxygen on his Sp02 gets lower below 85%, they did a restless leg test and sleep monitoring with no conclusive results, the specialists seem to have dismissed this symptom as no relevance?
