Hi,

I am a 19 year old female, 5"3 avg weight. A few days ago, I began having a pain on the left side of my chest right around my left breast. The pain worsens if I poke or prod it. I have had intense backache (lower and upper). Pain is in my arms occasionally. I have shortness of breath, smothering/choking feeling. I am currently menstruating, and I am wondering if any of these symptoms are related to that. Also, my entire chest area feels heavy and tight. I'm scared, and last night I had the worst panic attack of my entire life. I read something on the internet about those symptoms being heart attack symptoms, and i flipped. I was laying in bed about to go to sleep, and I had a pain in my chest hit hard all of a sudden, couldn't breath, felt this sense of impending doom/dread. I felt like I was dying and that I had to get out of that situation as fast as possible. I was shaky inside and out, my heart was pounding. This lasted a few minutes til I took a valium to finally get to sleep. Was this just a panic attack or something heart related. I do have anxiety disorder, but i have never experience something like this before. Any answers will be most helpful. I am litererally making myself sick. I am nauseated. The craziest thing is that earlier that morning I had taken a 12 hr midol, and these symptoms started creeping back up when the 12 hr's was up, which makes me think I am just having a lot of panic/anxiety. I've read about panic attacks, I know the symptoms, but feeling one happening to you is entirely different and I never want to feel that way again. Please help. I'm a wreck.

  • I hope this helps. I took an extra strength midol about a year ago. A few hours after takeing it I had a horrible panic attack. I wound up in my roomates bed crying for no reason, scared, thought I was having a heart attack, and my entire body was shakey. I called poison control to see if it was the midol and they said that it can cause those type's of reactions due to the concentrated caffenine (which I didnt see as an ingredient but thier poison control so guess they know better). Told me it would pass and not to worry about it. Stay away from caffine I am probably allerigic to it (look up allergies to caffine if you drink alot, you might want to stop). Definately not a doctor but thought my experience might help. Good luck.

  • I am a nurse that specializes in gynecology. Your symptoms seem to be very difficult to handle. However, it seems to me that you have an anxiety disorder that may need medication or change in medication, relaxation techniques, such as meditation, prayer, music. You may benefit from talking to a professional about your anxiety. These symptoms are very real and as you experience them, you tend to increase your anxiety level as you panic, making the symptoms worse. The previous responses to your questions are valid and helpful. Maybe it is a medication you take to relieve symptoms of your period. If you have chest pain that is not related to an anxiety attack, you need to see a doctor. There are illnesses that can cause intermittent chest discomfort or palpitations that are not serious, such as mitral valve prolapse. It is very common and easily diagnosed with an echocardiogram. Also, if you are on birth control and are a smoker, you are causing risk to your vessels that can cause heart problems in women. Good luck

  • Also, in rare cases endometriosis has been found in the lungs. So, if the chest symptoms only occur around your period this could be it.

  • I get soreness under my one breast a week before my menstral cycle, though it has never caused anything but discomfort. It has a name actually, I just forgot what it was, and FYI it is usually one of those randomish things that just happens to some, but you should see if your is related to something if this is the case good luck.
