I've currently been suffering from a very deep chesty cough. It got so bad that I could barely breathe and was weezing heavily (i dont suffer from asthma and have never smoked), i continued to wake up in the night as i felt like i was choking. I have been coughing up flem as well. I went to the Doctors who diagnosed me with bronchitous and gave me antibiotics. I have been on them for almost a week and things have only worsened.

At the moment, my cough is still very deep and i fall into coughing fits for minutes at a time. I weeze when i breathe - especially in the morning and evening. I am very very tired and find activities such as going up and down stairs exhausting, yet I cannot seem to sleep. I keep getting horrendously painful headaches and have a temperature of around 102 degrees F.

The antibiotics dont seem to be working - could this be anything else?

Thanks so much,

Natalie

  • after a week on antibiotics there ought to be improvement...choking in the night and temp. may indicate pnuemonia or a worse case of bronchitis than initially diagnosed...best bet is to revisit your doc. incase he feels a stronger antibiotic is required. Hope you are feeling better soon.

  • It sounds more like Pertussis (whooping cough) and you need to get on penicillin for that. Possibly pneumonia? I'd go to a different doctor.

  • hi, sorry you are so sick. I would suggest you have a blood test for whooping cough, I had this 10 months ago and you do literally wake up at night with a feeling of being choked. I also had coughing fits that lasted 10-15 mins and would leave me exhausted. If you have this your doctor will prescribe you antibiotics, these will not help you at all (unfortunately), they are only prescribed so that you are not contageous anymore. I had it for 3 months. I would suggest putting some eucalyptus oil in an oil burner (pine oil is good too), and use a humidifier/vapouriser, these seemed to lessen the coughing fits. No amount of medication, cough mixture seems to offer any relief.I hope that you don't have this, but I would get checked just to be sure.hope you feel better soon. Kitty K (>"<)

Kitty K (>" I forgot to mention, it doesn't matter if you were immunised against this as a child. I had all my immunisations, and I got it anyway!! ( 5 whooping cough shots in total, mum checked my immunisation records!!)

  • Definately sounds like pneumonia. It just so happens that there are some antibiotics that don't take care of pneumonia but take care of other infections, so the doctor would have to prescribe you another type of antibiotic that does the job. If not pneumonia or bronchitis i would definately check for turberculosis. I hope you feel better and by the way, DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS!!!
