Face swelling, ear aching, crippling flu?

I got intense earache in my left ear 7 days ago. The following day the left side of my face swelled up, and that night I could not chew because my jaw ached. My right ear also became painful. The next morning I could barely move, felt like flu and i was burning up, so called in sick and slept for 24 hours solid. When I woke, I had intense pain in both hip joints. While the flu seemed better, the high temp remained, and I could not climb stairs at all, or walk very far because of my hip pain, (both sides). The earache cleared up but my face is still swollen, and I am only able to walk semi normally because of a 2 hour acupuncture session.
Nothing I have seen has explained these symptoms, and the NHS doctor just put it down to flu. I've had flu before, I've never had a swollen face or been nearly crippled by it before. Please, does this ring a bell with anyone?
I am 40, and had Lyme disease when I was 14, and that's the closest I can think to describe how this felt.
