Hello, my 11 year old daughter has been experiencing facial swelling as well as swollen feet, ankles, hands and wrists. This began 6/09 and she was treated with prednisone and put on zyrtec for environmental allergies. The swelling diminished temporarily, but has returned full force and she is miserable--she has gained 6 lbs from June to present and says her hands and feet hurt. She's had blood tests and all came back ok. She has an appt. with an allergist in 2 weeks. Has anyone heard of anything like this? I'm worried it's more than allergies and I'm overlooking something that the doctors need to know. Any help would be greatly appreciated--thank you.

  • These symptoms, including rapid weight gain, can occur with corticosteroid treatment and you should notify the prescribing physician if she is still taking the prednisone, which is usually administered in a tapered dose pack. Best regards, J Cottle, MD

  • Dr. Cottle, thanks so much for your reply. She finished her Prednisone dose the last week of June and continued taking the Zyrtec for three additional weeks. It was discontinued as it didn't seem to be helping her symptoms. My fear is that this may not be an allergy. Since an early age she has needed to eat on time or else she would become lethargic, moody and complain of muscle weekness. After eating, she would snap back to normal. We felt this was a low blood sugar issue and made sure she ate on time or had crackers available for her. Could all of this be somehow related to her swelling now? Thank you for your interest and time, it is greatly appreciated.

  • Blaze, thank you for your reply. I've never heard of Electro Hypersensitivity, but will definately be researching this and the possibility that it is affecting my daughter. All of the links to the information are wonderful and I thank you so much for your time. Thanks again!
