A friend of mine who is in her 60's has noticed one of her eyes has changed colors. She does not know whether or not this is something to be concerned about. Any information would be helpful. Other then this, her only health complaints are normal for her age.

  • What color were her eyes originally and what color has the one changed to? Was it a gradual change, or overnight? Is she on any medications, particularly eye drops/eye meds of any kind? Is it just the iris, or has the white part of her eye changed colors too? Does she have macular degeneration? Any changes in speech or cognitive changes? Is this the only symptom? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to help. I do think this should be seen by a doctor-- preferably an ophthalmologist. I think she should be seen quickly, as this could be a sign of some serious things. It could also be 'normal'-- I'm not trying to scare you. Answering the above questions may help us to help you and your friend.

  • She is Hispanic and has had dark brown eyes her entire life. In the past few months one eye has turned green. It started with a green ring around her iris and then slowly her dark ********e turned into a green eye. She has been on a diuretic for years, but no other real meds. At least there have been no changes in anything she takes in the past few years. She does not use eye drops and has not noticed any changes in her vision.

I wholeheartedly agree with Harmonium; I feel she should see both, an ophthalmologist and her GP/PCP (unless the opthalmologist may recognize something and supply referral/s) to insure that this is limited to the eyes. Specifically, to be certain that there isn't anything else that could be happening elsewhere in her body ... of which the eye change could be a sign.

  • Eye color can change.....but not normally just one eye. That can be a warning sign of something else: certain diseases, such as Fuch's heterochromic iridocyclitis, Horner's syndrome or pigmentary glaucoma, and even tumors, among other conditions. The term for two different eye colors is heterochromia. A person can be born with the condition, or acquire it; usually due to infection, trauma, infection, even eye drops!, or other conditions mentioned above. She should really see at least her GP but preferably and ophthalmologist as soon as she can to rule out the more threating conditions.

  • Thanks for the info. I will put pressure on her to make an appt. with her eye doctor. She last saw him a year and a half ago, so she is due for an exam.

  • Sounds like a good plan, better to be safe! You seem like quite a good friend, I hope she appreciates that. Best wishes to you both. :D

  • has her diet changed in the past few months. has she had any bodily changes on the opposit side of her body.you may want to speak to an iriologist a good one can tell you what you had for lunch just by looking through a magnifying glass at your eye. it is also known as tebetan eye readers, many time they can infom you of things that your doctor could miss that would help pin point your symptoms. many of the doctors in my arean have worked with them, and find them vital to work with because the ones around here are almost never wrong, its nice to have them working together. i hope its nothing, and she is perfictly fine. i also recomend the eye doctor as well. i am not a doctor, and this is only a suggestion.

  • The only change in her diet has been to add a bit more fiber as suggested by a GI doc. But her eye changed colors before that. Yesterday I shared with her the posts made here and she finally took action and made some doctor appts. This afternoon she went to her PCP and she also made an appt. with her eye doctor.
