Im 38 yrs and Ive had several scares in the past 12 months with bouts of sudden extremely heavy bleeding during my periods (to the point i actually thought i was heamorraging and thought i may have to go to hospital if it didnt very quickly become more normal).
eg today i lost about a quarter of a cup of blood or more in less than one minute puddled all over floor as i couldnt make the toilet in time as tampon suddenly flooded. I often get big clots coming out when this happens too (today it was one almost half the size of my palm). Is it possible to haermorrage from the spot where big clots come away from ones uterus lining???

Does anyone know at what point in bleeding bouts like this, that i should panic and go to hospital? (situation when it happens this much very quickly does panic me a bit. Today i rang my boyfriend at work while it was gushing as it made me panic).

I know my mother ended up having an hysterectomy due to a heavy bleeding incident(s) and are worried im heading the same kind of way. (i've seen two normal GPS over this ..both males.. and told them what is going on and they were completely non concerned).

So at what point do i need to seek urgent medical help?? or is that unlikely to happen?

  • Try acupuncture--it works great for bleeding like this. You need to get a couple of exams--checked for fibroids and then probably a uterine biopsy (which is done in the doctor's office)...I had a male doctor tell me I had fibroids and the only thing to do was have a hysterectomy--but they can just remove the fibroid now. I balked at that and got 3 acupuncture treatments, which after the first one it calmed down. You may also need projesterone--get blood work for hormones. Work with a gyn to determine what is causing it, but know the "hysterectomy" route can be just a cure all for not knowing how to fix something. Watch yourself until it's regulated and use some common sense. this doctor discusses alternative treatments:http://www.gynalternatives.com/fibroids.htmYou need an evaluation.

  • I had the same problem when I was your age, I am now 53. Have your thyroid checked by your doctor. You may have to insist, I did. He did not want to have the test done and told me I was nuts, but then he called and appologized. So stand up for yourself and have this checked. At the same time you should make and appointment with a good gynocologysts. There are lots of other problems that could cause heavy bleeding. I was hypothroid and that can cause heavy bleeding with the large clots that you are describing. But please go see a good physician, who can go over all the possibililies.

  • Hi, I am 43 and have had this for the past two years, on and off. The past three months, it has happened in a row now. I asked my OB-GYN and she isn't concerned, as long as my CBC (Complete Blood Count) comes back okay. That would show if I am low on iron. It did, so she said the choice is going on the pill to make flow lighter or just putting up with it. I chose to stick it out.Once thing I have been noticing is that, even though the flow is really really heavy, I bleed for just 2 1/2 or 3 days, versus 5 days when I was younger. So, like you, I feel that it is just thinner and coming out a lot faster (for me a quarter cup sounds right and usually just when I go to the bathroom), but perhaps not overall more that I bled before. Is your number of flow days still five? Do you have any other symptoms? If you were low on iron, you'd be pale and tired.I also have a small fibroid that could be interrupting my lining, my doctor said, and of course as you near 40, the hormones are up and down alot during the month and can contribute to more accumulation.I wouldn't panic (I always do and everything always comes out okay). Just 1) make sure you are taking a multi-vitamin with iron in it or eat meat, chicken or fish at least once a day; 2) see an OB-GYN that can do a quickie ultrasound right in office (if you don't have insurance the whole appt. should run $300 at most--and you are worth it!). It is probably hormonal shift... my doctor says that it most always the case... or a fibroid which is a nusiance but presents no problem besides heavy bleeding.Don't worry... have a glass of red wine and make that appointment! Julie :-)

  • My period isnt of shorter time period at all when this happening, still got the thing now (but not flooding anymore). I have no iron stores, so are borderline anemic (i know that from past blood tests). I was borderline anemic and i was eatting at the time meat two to three times a day in large amounts as i had meat cravings, (so was very surprised to find out out about having no iron stores when i was eatting so much meat). That was before ive come down with this flooding issue. I have polycystic ovulation Syndrome (for past 20 yrs or so).. so my periods are heavy anyway, without this added flood. ......... thanks for the replies. I will book in with doctor who specialises in female issues some time. Hypothyriod suggestion, very interesting as my family has history of hypothyriodism (with 3 family members with it) and i have another condition in which hypothyriodism is common with). Last time i was tested (6 mths ago) thou my thyriod levels were fine.
