Hi, I hope someone can help as I have not been really getting anywhere with my doctors. I am a 36 year old male. On the morning of the 16th August this year I weighed myself and was 12st 6lbs. This was good as I had been trying to lose weight for a while, and I had managed to get to 12st 6lbs from 12st 11.5lbs within a month. Also, for a few years now I've had more flatulence than is normal, but for roughly 5 months before August it increased to an average of about once every 2 minutes. My bowels would gurgle away most of the time as well.

Now, my problem is this, that about 6pm on the 16th August I noticed that the flatulence had stopped, but I have no idea why it would just suddenly stop like that. Then, at around 9pm that night I noticed that I had slight swelling around my lower abdomen and groin area, to just near my belly button. Over the next few days to Wednesday night the swelling spread more to my upper abdomen and around my lower sides, as well as my hips, going round to under my buttocks. On Thursday it had spread to the sides of my chest under my arms. Also over these few days, I lost another 1lb in weight taking me to 12st 5lbs.

Just before the swelling started, I had managed to get down another notch on my belt, but now I've had to go back up a notch and it is tighter now than when I was 12st 11.5lbs. The annoying thing is that because the swelling is generelized and not localized, the doctors don't think I have swelling. They did give me peppermint oil capsules to try and relieve the trapped gas, and they have worked a tiny bit, but the swelling is still there. I am now getting aches around the areas that are swollen. These aches come and go, but are becoming more frequent.

I'm not sure if this has any relevence to the above symptoms, but a few weeks ago my throat and tongue had swollen during the night, and my throat and mouth were completely dry. I now wake up each night every 20 minutes or so because my throat is so dry, and I have to drink some water. My doctor gave me steroids and hayfever meds to try and clear it up incase it was a throat infection, or an allergy. I don't know if this has anything to do with acid reflux as for a year or two now I've had heartburn and find it difficult to burp, and when I do burp I get a burning horrible taste in my throat about 70% of the time.

I've had other symptoms over the past 18 months, and I do feel that they are all in some way related, but the doctors cannot figure out exactly what is wrong. I have another appointment this Friday, and would like more thorough tests done to find out why I have this swelling. It would be great if someone here could help, or have an idea what might be the cause. Any help or advice is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Barry

Thanks,BarryBarry,My father has Chrons disease and will suffer from flatulence and then swelling of his abdomen when he gets a blockage in his intestines - either full or partial. You might want to suggest an upper or lower gi to your doctors to determine whether you have a partial blockage in your intestines. One thing that helps my dad some is to go on a liquid diet for a few days to help alleviate the swelling if it is a partial block. Hope this helps.

I'm not sure if I have been tested for Chrons disease or not. I've had loads of tests done and I know I've been tested for Celiac disease, but I'll need to check when I see the doctor this afternoon. I'll mention what you've suggested to my doctor and hope that it will help get to the bottom of this. I'll try the liquid diet depending on what my doc says. If there is a blockage, partial or full, how do you get it cleared? Cheers,Barry

Thanks,BarryBarry- Sounds like my aunt who was diagnosed with Celiac's disease. It's an autoimmune disease triggered by an inability to digest wheat products. It causes gas, bloating, a "rushing" of the bowels, and weight loss or fluctuation is commonly seen. There are numerous side effects associated with this disorder. Ask your Dr. to test for this one!

  • Have you tried a food elimination diet to rule out food intolerances? Hi kermworm, Thanks. I've not tried this, but I have been thinking about it for a while now to see if I do have an intolerance to certain food types. I'll porbably keep a diary of what I eat each day and then try eliminating something for a few days and see if anything changes.

Hi, Thanks for the help. I checked with my doctor and I have been tested for Celiac disease and my results came back normal. I've seen a couple of doctors, and they are leaning towards IBS, as the tests I had done to rule out other more serious conditions all came back negative. I am being referred to the hospital for an ultrasound to try to see if there is anything up with my stomach and bowels, etc, and they said my appointment should be in roughly 3 weeks time. I hope it's nothing serious, but I hope they can at least tell what's causing the swelling. I will probably try to eat less wheat to see if I notice any changes, as I'm willing to try anything to get myself back to normal. Thanks again for your help. Cheers,Barry

  • Hi,I'd start by going to a dietitian...it could be a fructose malabsorption.
