Hi
I'm 14 years old, 6'2, 73 kilos, and for the last three months I have been experiencing the above symptoms. I am constantly exhausted no matter how long I sleep. I have dizzy spells where I get extremely light-headed and feel as though I will pass out. My joints ache, and I feel as though I am constantly recovering from the flu. My family doctor did some blood tests about two months ago, my white count was elevated so she prescribed antibiotics. I took the full course, I've been eating properly and taking a multivitamin every day, which she suggested. Two weeks ago I started getting really heavy nosebleeds and mild fevers. I don't know whats wrong or what I can/should do. Please help!

  • Update: I've got a nosebleed right now and they last for ages, sometimes more than half an hour. Could anemia cause my symptoms? What else could?I don't think I have a family history of anything like this- my grandmother and both grandfathers died of cancer, my mom has lupus and my uncle has type 1 diabetes. I'm ususally really energetic, but I'm so tired and feel so crap I can barely move. Also, I'm not sure if my white count was elevated or erm.. downivated? because all she said was that my white count indicated I might have an infection and that she could put me on some penicillin. Help! Please!

  • You sound like you need urgent help with your nosebleeds. This is not the right place to look for urgent help. Please have your parents take you to the nearest emergency room or urgent care center. They can run blood tests to find out the cause of your nose bleeds. Meanwhile, for first aid:-sit upright-pinch your nose with thumb and index finger for few minutes and breathe through your mouth-don't pick or blow your nose.

  • well, I got a diagnosis. AML. Acute Myelode Leukemia. I guess it's pretty common in kids, and treatable. Bloody ***l

  • As it happens, I do. However, I've got a diagnosis. Much as I'd like it to be wrong, it seems unlikely that it is.

  • It's just-is there anything else it could be? They used the fact that I bruised easily as a diagnostic criteria, but I've always bruised like a peach. Is there some sort of test result I should ask to see?

Is there some sort of test result I should ask to see?If you Google Acute Myelode leukemia, you will see that it is a serious cancer that occurs in kids but is not a common childhood illness. You should have diagnostic tests that confirm this diagnosis. You must get your parents to support your desire for full disclosure and if they balk at that, bring them the research easily attained online and confront them with that. Also the hosital/clinic that you go to should have a patient advocate who can help you. Good Luck.
