I am 38 years old and suffer from chronic anxiety and depression. I was examined by an internest twice because I've been plagued by feeling like I can barely catch my breath (gasping for air) and I burp excessively and uncontrollably. The internest told me to stop gasping for air--but you see I CAN'T because I have to catch my breath--it's a vicious cycle. ...And then there's my burping--burps get stuck in my throat and I also burp uncontrollably. THE INTERNEST SAYS ALL OF IT'S ANXIETY and that I need to manage my anxiety. The doctor says exercise and has changed my medicine a number of times, but nothing seems to work. I AM VERY VERY UNCOMFORTABLE and totally embarassed in social situations. Oh yeah--I also yawn constantly to try to catch my breath. DESPERATE-- PLEASE HELP.

Nothing that you can change with a "positive attitude". I am sure you already have a positive attitude. Please read this link. It talks about what 2 very different women did to figure out what was behind their anxiety, digestive problems, hyperventilation, and gasping for air, among other things.http://forums.wrongdiagnosis.com/showthread.php?t=7286Stick around. You are not alone.Best.

  • sorry you have this trouble.if it was me i think id be tempted to trygiving the lungs a healthy shock, both to disrupt a pattern i didnt like and to increase their capacity.do something to make them work!then they cant misbehave.the burping is probably due to swallowing air, something else you cant do if you are breathing heavily .your lungs were built for this ;to sustain you while you run,all day if necessary.but get the doc togive you the o.k. before you start.let us know how you get on.
