My friend has been saying that she doesnt feel well for the past couple of months and we cannot think what is wrong with her...
Here are her symptoms:
-tiredness, even after 10 hours sleep, she will be tired in the morning, feeling slightly better after lunch
-mood swings, and not really realising it
-she cannot concentrate on her work
-over the course of about 1 month she lost about 8-10 pounds in weight
-and using the toilet about 7+ times a day, which is kinda a lot for her?

Shes 15 and it would be great of anyone can guess or give us their opinion on what this is xx:o

When going to the toilet she said peeing more so. We sort of thought of diabetes but wouldnt you continue to loose weight if you had diabetes? hers has leveled off as far as we know? Thank you so much xx

  • By using the toilet you mean peeing or pooping, or do you know? she might be diabetic, most people don't realize it but fatigue is a symptom of diabetes.

  • Those are also symptoms of a thyroid problem, so she might want to get that checked out.

  • Yes, she needs to be screened for diabetes and thyroid problems. Get her to a doctor asap.

  • Get her to go and see a doctor.. she needs tests done including for diabetes.. all those symptoms can be diabetes. Also is it possible that your friend could have an eatting disorder she's hiding?? eg anorexia? (anorexics can have those symptoms and may make excuses for going to toilet a lot..eg to throw up)

  • Actually its the bulemics that make themselves puke, and i hate the stereotypicality, if it she weren't a teenage girl i doubt anyone would have suggested an eating disorder, and then theres the fact that her friend says she isn't still losing weight. Hmm... if she doesn't have to drink a TON of water (she can go a class period without a drink of water) that would rule out diabetes insipidus, which means it is almost definitely hormonal, she should go to her doctor, if they can't help her she should ask for a referal to an endocrinologist. If they can't find anything or any new symptoms appear let us know.

Kind of absurd that you are saying that annorexics dont go making themselves vomit (and the toilet is usually the place for that!) Annorexics if they have no choice but to eat in front of others (there may be many reasons an anorexic may do that.. eg to hide eatting issue)... will then often go and make themselves sick. Annorexia.. as far as i know.. often starts off in teenage years (thou not always but this is often the case) hence my bringing this to the others attention... and it can cause most of those symptoms eg mood swings, tiredness, lack of concentation. An Anorexic may also hide further weight loss!! "if she doesn't have to drink a TON of water (she can go a class period without a drink of water) that would rule out diabetes insipidus, " Wouldnt that all depend on just how bad the diabetes was if she had that?? No way do i think diabetes should be ruled out on something like that.. without a proper test.

  • For the most part anorexics can't be forced to eat more than they want to, other than through a feeding tube, it is usually bulemics who will eat, as long as they can throw up afterwards, however some teens are both anorexic and bulemic. And you should look up a condition before you say it can't be ruled out. I didn't say she doesn't have diabetes, thats actually what i assume she probably does have, diabetes in sipidus is a completely different disorder, which has nothing to do with blood sugar levels. If i believed she had that, which considering she can go like an hour without water i don't, the doctor i would suggest she see might not be an endocrinologist.

  • I can tell you that she does not have an eating disorder in any form, being she does eat infront of everyone happily and has no symtopms of an eating disorder, such as, eroded fingernails, eroded or discolouring to her teeth and is not suspiciuos in any manner. :D Which is thankful!! But we are still appricative of all your opinions and are grateful for your time. Updates: we explained to her mother what was wrong but she has passed it off as nothing but hormones:confused:, my friend is sill rather concerned, could you please tell us exactly how you feel if you get tired during the day or if it could be diabetes tell us how you were diagnosed :) Thank you xx

  • I know how that is, the parents not being concerned, which sucks because they aren't the one suffering. Also, I forgot to ask before, is she on any medications? Heres a link explaining the symptoms of the different types, but it could actually be something to do with hormones, although contrary to your friend's mother's beliefs, it will not just "go away".
