I've had edema for the past 6-9 months, and I've had so many procedures done, and still....no diagnosis, my heart is normal, my labs are normal, catscans/us/xrays/-pelvis/abdominal/kidneys/-normal ..I've seen a cardiologist-found nothing/ had a colonoscopy I was diagnosed ...IBS, then I was OB doc...found nothing, had my legs scanned and nothing found, even saw a general/plastic surgeon...nothing found but possible hernia but not a cause for edema..
This all started when I had rapid weight gain jumped 2-3 sizes within a month.... during the time I was a runner and I ate clean , my abdominal area and legs swell as if I am pregnant, I've had a tubal done 6 years ago, and not pregnant. My left leg seems to swell up more than the other.
The 'new" doctor I am seeing now, has no concerns, but I can not live a normal life when my legs feel heavy/and are swollen. I've been given "water pills" to help, but I do not understand why I have to take these on a daily basis, without knowing what has caused this. This has caused me to limit excersing/running...some depression and stress that 's caused constipation due to IBS.
please help.

  • How is your diet? Have you being doing any research for the explanation so far? Do you have a good renal function?

  • I drink 1-2 cups of coffee a day, drink plenty of water..(urine is light yellow to clear), eat low fat, low sodium/high fiber foods, and over the counter Benifiber, and I take the Lasix, (can't seem to lose any weight).. and the swelling continues to appear. I was told by the doc that since everything has come up normal, that I look good so then I should feel good, and suggested that I would need to discontinue the meds in order to determine if my body is producing the fluids due to water pills, so I stopped taking all meds about 4 days ago, and my legs are heavy...have a shine to them and are swollen, especially my left leg.

  • What fiber rich foods do you eat? Homemade legumes and fresh roots and vegetables or do you eat boxed cereals and boxed grains, or pasta? Also, do you consume minerals? what are your sources of minerals? So far I think you should stop caffeine until your body regulates the way it manages water. I suspect that you have a deficiency of vitamin B6, zinc (also vitamin C, magnesium.

  • If your functions are okay- you should be able to take an Epson Salt/Sea Salt bath. Research on that- it should work to relieve the pressure.

  • Yes - i have the problem - heart seems clear, endocrine system is functioning, hormones are allegedly normal - i had it once for 8 weeks about a year ago, then gave up smoking and the edema flared again. With me, am sure is connected to my hormones - seems to get worse before period, and eases after. Same as you, left leg is worse - and same as you, have put on weight recently with giving up smoking. I take vitex agnus castus (balances female hormones) and evening primrose oil - does the same - and when edema gets bad, some potassium to ease the build up - it's a diuretic. I don't take the potassium for more than a couple of days at a time. I'm sure if i can just get myself into some exercise, it will go by itself, but am feeling too sick to walk far (have immune system thing that is causing that). Instead, i am trying isometric exercises - basically, u just identify muscle groups, tense and hold, and it's very low impact. Docs have been less than useful (surprise!) and you sound both worse than me with the edema and healthier than me with your food. One thing you don't mention - have you had your thyroid checked? If they do find depressed thyroid function, stay off carrots in any quantity (beta carotene messes with thyroid function) and off soya products made from unfermented soya (soya milk, for instance) because these also depress thyroid function. Good luck.

  • Has your thyreoid and and adrenal function been tested? Hypothiroidism and Cushing disease may also cause edema.

A buildup of protein. Have your protein checked (sometimes in urine sample). Checkout Mayoclinic.com and look at Amyloidosis. Good luck. SRM600@cox.com
