Every time the seasons change, I seem to get an infection in my ear. It's kind of like eczema.. dry skin.. turns into a scab, then of course I pick at it and it bleeds. It's so painful and I don't know what to do about it.. any suggestions?

  • I have same problem and was advised by doctor to keep ears dry when swimming, in shower etc. this helps prevent infection.

  • I had a huge problem similar to you with the quadriplegic I care for.I didn't try pharmisutical stuff as I use such things as a last resort. If you have infection in the ear a few drops of witch hazel three times a day will clear up and prevent infection. It has alcohol in it and the bacteria really don't take kindly to it. It may sting a bit and feel as though it is burning, but don't worry it isn't eating your eardrum, and if it is too burny, then dilute it a bit with water that has been boiled and left to cool. My quad friend had massive ear infections due to a hole in the ear since childhood (gromits), conventional drops didn't work and they keep draining out and there isn't a lot of ear drops in a bottle to accommodate for the loss. So I turned to witch hazel and used is also as an ear rinse. It is also good to put witch hazel into ears after swimming for those prone to ear infection. Well, the ENT specialist gave us drops and said hole in ears can heal themselves if provide with a clean enough environment and he would see us in a couple of months. I tossed the drops and for the following weeks used witch hazel. Get an ear dropper. At the next ENT appointment the doc said the hole had totally healed and no sign of inflamation. I said i decided not to use the ear drops due to the lose factor and told him what was used instead. He didn't quite know what to say, but said it seemed to have done the trick and since it worked thought it a great idea. I mention all this to rest any fears using this witch hazel. This was our last problem with ear infections and chasing doctors. any signs of infects out comes the witch hazel.Regarding the ezma scab a bit of sunlight is useful. My friend gets ten minutes of sun a day to keep the entire head free of ezma. I accompany this with a daily heavy application of metholated spirits (watch it doesn't get in the eyes). At the moment the only sign of ezma are a couple of red patches above the eye brows, but that agovating crusty scab in and on the ears has vanished.I also do not wash me friend with soap, as this agrovates the condition. Warm water and flannel and a good rub with a dry towel to remove any dead skin that we naturally produce each day; soap is a major culprit for oily and smelly BO skin.hope this is of some help. Ezma is really maddening!!!!searchingsam
