easy bruising

My hands have started swelling/bruising easily from routine tasks like stirring things with a fork or opening a tight lid. This usually happens at the base of the finger or thumb, hurts for about 30 min., swells for a few hours and leaves a large, light blue bruise that extends half way up the finger and around the base that lasts for days. My doctor seems perplexed. I just had a routine physical with normal results from the blood test (triglycerides were a little high, but otherwise okay). Any ideas?

  • Are you getting adequate nutrition? When my daughter became a vegitarian she didn't really know how to do it "properly" and her nutrition suffered. She bruised sooooo easily during that time. Just a thought. Good Luck, Katherine

  • Possible thighroid problem, my mother in law has a thighroid disease, when she doesn't take her medication she swells up, bruises very easily, possible mood swings, and hormone problems.Probably not what you have, doctor would have checked most likely.

  • This is a long shot, because it's in everything, but any chance it could be a vitamin C deficiency? I changed my diet and started getting bruises all over but it went away when I started eating a green pepper every day. Good luck.

  • Hi sfeuless,I have a very simular bruising problem. What answers or solutions have you found???sincerely, tchapmanI also have this problem and unable to get diagnosis. It can happen to any part of my hand only the palmar side - palm, fingers. Happens with pretty light pressure, hurts then the discoloration. It started happening 7 years ago (age 48). I am well nourished. It last happened yesterday. I am a doctor of pharmacy and so have some clinical training and this has not helped me find an answer.
