Help,

I have twin boys who were born prematurely. They of course recieved blood transfusions. They both came home on apnea monitors. One twin came home on oxygen. They both have of course have GERD, Allergies, Asthma. Since coming home they both have had Staph infections. One twin is constantly having reoccuring infections such as impetigo and cellulitis. He has not seen a dermatologist yet. He keeps scratching in the head constantly, even while he sleeps. Of course, he scratches till he bleeds. It wakes him up crying. The other twin is more sluggish but suffers with sinunitis and he created an abscess on his big toe. Which now sheds skin in the area of where the abscess was on the big toe. His big toe has always been a concern to me. My concern is if the blood transfusion caused the Strep A or could he got it from the hospital? Why is it reoccuring so much. What do I need to do or talk to their doctor about? They stay sick and congested I know because of the GERD, Allergies, and Asthma. The skin infections is a concern to me, could it possibly be in the blood.

  • How old are your twins? Are they just on formula, or have the started solids? Do they take any meds? I recommend finding a good naturopathic doctor or other alternative practitioner who specializes in nutrition and pediatrics...your little ones have very compromised immune systems due to their births, compounded by the staph infections. An alternative approach may really help them boost their systems up and promote healing. Western docs are just going to prescribe more meds which will further harm their immune systems in my opinion. You should still get western tests and I recommend blood tests for infection that could be causing the abscess... In Chinese medicine abscess and boils are diagnosed as heat in the blood. Treating the underlying inbalance will help vent the rashes and boils. Hope this helps and good luck to you.DOM

  • I suggest following acuann's advice. Traditional docs will keep giving drugs but probably will not look for the cause of why the infections keep coming back.

  • The twins are 2 years old yes they are on meds. They were started off on Barthanocol, Zantac, Reglan then they removed the Barthanocol and Reglan. That's when they started showing the signs of asthama related problems so the doctor put them on Zyrtec, Albuterol and Xoponex with a spacer, They have a cough medicine called Brometene They take nightly. Also, I have to substitute the Brometene for Robustussin. Since about one years of age that's when they started showing the signs of Staph and it's been reoccuring.

Also, I forgot to mention that both of them have frequent bowel movements sometimes with mucus in it and they bleed alot around the rectum. Especially the one with skin problems.

  • I suggest you visit this website www.wholeapproach.com and look for their food list. You can print this out and it will give you a great guideline of what to feed your kids and what things to avoid. It is helpful for candida, celiac, and food intolerance. It will give your kids' digestion a break. Their bowel problems tell me that they are having food intolerance issues. Look into candida overload at the above website, especially for the little one with skin infections. A good and safe treatment is called THREELAC. Also, get a good quality children's chewable probiotic and give it to them daily. You are going to need to be diligent about the foods they eat. And if you see an acupuncturist who specializes in Chinese herbal medicine, you may be able to take your kids off most of the drugs - these drugs are just treating symptoms and have NEVER been tested for safety in 2 year old kids. Please be careful! To find a practitioner near you visit www.acufinder.comBest of luck!DOM

  • I have a set a twins boy + girl born prem.they were in a follow up program till they were 3,at a childrens hospital, because a regular doc. is not trained in this. we traveled 70 min each way every 3 mnths,if we had a problems in between that time we called.I myself is the type of person i tell the doc what i think I donnot give up on the problem,if i feel in my heart there is something wrong 99% of the time moms are right. Had taken my little boy to emergency room 3 time sent home with meds inhaler things still was not right took him back same day,by this time they had to ambulance him to children hos.{even if you think that they think your over reacting, its better to be safe then sorry later}they should not be waking up crying do to a rash,or bleeding do to a rash,i think the right doc. could solve alot of these problems not all, some premies have lots of problem,it hard to look after 2 babies at once if healthy, when sick all the even harder.this board may answer alot of your ? for you.
