Does anyone have any ideas what this could be?

I'm eighteen and I'm usually quite healthy.

For about a month now I have been coming up with bruises very frequently and I never know what they are from. They started out small but they're getting bigger - I have one on my thigh which is about six centimetres wide.

I have been getting nose bleeds about once every two to three days which is weird for me because I never get nose bleeds. Could it just be that it's Spring here in Australia so the weather change is causing it?

I am constantly fatigued - I've been really struggling to stay awake at work and on weekends I've been taking naps during the day.

Also the past few days I've had a lot of comments saying I'm very pale, I've noticed it myself now too.

I've been to a doctor who sent me for extensive blood tests but everything has come back normal. It took over an hour for my arm to stop bleeding after the blood test but apparently my clotting and everything is fine so I'm really confused.

If it's not my blood then what else can it be?!!

  • go to another doctor right away and tell him what you said here. Take copies of your blood work with you so you don't need to get poked again for the same tests. you may need to see a geneticist to run a battery of tests, too...take the vit. D with K to help in the meantime

I find it nearly impossible that your blood work came back normal. There are several indicators that point to anemia in routine blood work, but it is low iron levels that can and do cause every symptom you mention. The good news is, it is easy to correct by taking an over the counter supplement. I would still pursue a second opinion from a new doctor that is thorough enough to determine what caused your iron to become low in the first place. It could be as simple as heavy menstrual cycles... but for your own peace of mind, getting to the bottom of the origin is worth the time and effort. Good luck!

I have had my iron tested at least 5 times by at least 3 doctors in the past 6 months and it has always come back normal - I used to give blood and they tested heamaglobin levels every time and it was always normal so I don't think it's iron... I also took over the counter iron supplements for about three months and it didn't do anything.... I agree that it sounds like anemia but maybe it's not because of iron?? I don't really know much about it but from the stuff I have found there are a number of causes of anemia but I wouldn't even know where to start to find out why. And you'd think it would come up in a blood test?? And also, does anemia cause bruising? Because I woke up with ANOTHER bruise today, this time on my back... and you'd think I'd know if I was hit in the back or something but I honestly have no idea how I got it. It's pretty big too, about the size of my hand...Apparently my blood work came back completely normal - in the words of my doctor 'you are a very healthy girl'..... but I definitely don't feel healthy and I don't look healthy either... I went back to my doctor and he said it might be a virus so wait four weeks and see if it gets better but if it doesn't he'll send me to a blood specialist. So confusing!! If anyone can shed any light on this at all it would be very much appreciated....

  • I have been getting nose bleeds about once every two to three days which is weird for me because I never get nose bleeds. Please don't ignore the nosebleeds. My ex-husband experienced nosebleeds for probably 10 years before he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Same with my mom. My ex used to work on radar and was a heavy cell phone user, and the radiowaves/microwaves emitted from wireless phones have been linked to brain tumors.
