Hi everyone,
This might be a fairly long post but please bear with me.

For about 4 years I have had problems with my abdomen. It started out getting a little larger which I just thought was weight gain. Until I was 18 (I am 23 now) I was 50 kilos and never had any weight issues. However, my stomach started getting larger and I was worried I was pregnant because no other part of me was getting bigger! I had no other symptoms at this point. I also might mention that I have always had very irregular periods - sometimes coming 4-6 months apart. Im not sure if this has any correlation to the stomach distention.

At about 20 years old I slowly started putting on weight, which I just assumed was a natural part of growing up and my doctor suggested that the Pill may have changed my hormones and caused this. I went up to about 66kgs and with diet and exercise was able to get down to and maintain 64kgs but couldnt go any lower than this. My stomach by now was looking huge, like I was 8 months pregnant, and I had to suck it in every day. Nobody has seen what it looks like, not even my family because Im too embarassed.

Then about 2 years ago I started to get bowel symptoms - constipation, diarrhea, pain, bloating etc. My doctor suggested IBS, and I went to a naturopath who took blood tests and determined I was sensitive (but only mildly) to things such as gluten, lactose, onion, capsicum, soy and a range of other things. So I went on a 12 week diet (including herbs from the naturopath) which included NONE of the sensitive foods (which was incredibly hard) but nothing changed. In fact, things got worse.

I then went to a gastroenterologist and had a colonoscopy and endoscopy which came back with no results. I have tried medication aimed at helping me digest fats easier and help empty my stomach, to no avail. No IBS treatments work either such as peppermint or the chemist pills.

Last year for about 6 months I also got a severe case of flatulence which made me avoid even sleeping at my boyfriends house because it was so bad. Fortunately for some reason this has eased up.

Now Im stuck because every time I go to a new doctor, as soon as they hear me mention IBS they dismiss everything else I say as being just apart of IBS. I try to steer clear of the word 'bloating' because thats NOT what my stomach is like - it is CONSTANTLY distended, like Im pregnant (but fortunately Im able to suck it in) and also does get bloated, hard and sore sometimes. Its worse at night than in the morning, which leads me to think its something to do with food, but then its always pretty much the same size.

I am going for a pelvic ultrasound next week which Im actually hoping will show something such as cysts so at least I know the issue. My problem is that all of the symptoms above might not even be related - I feel like I could have a case of IBS but also combined with something else which makes my stomach stick out so far. It doesnt help that right now Im 68kgs (which is my heaviest Ive been because I have been overseas for 13 months) so everyone dismisses it as stomach fat. But even people I know who are 20-30kgs heavier dont have a stomach sticking out as far as mine....

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I feel like its up to me to figure out the problem because I have absolutely no luck with doctors, and I would like to hear from regular people how they handle these issues.

- Amy

  • Have you found anything further? your symptoms sound just like mine, email me at torgsorg@aol.com. xx I havent found anything yet... Im going to get a pelvic ultrasound next week which I hope will show something. I forgot to add, I also get pain, sometimes a few times a week sometimes not for weeks on end. It is always different though - sometimes feels like stomach cramps, other times like diarrhea pain, sometimes like sharp pain in the abdomen... Have you found anything yet? What specialists have you seen? Id rather chat on the forum than private email

For about 4-5 years now I have had distension in my belly that is SO bad, I could pass for 7 months pregnant. My bloating comes on immediately after eating I have lost any kind of normal social life, and my clothes feel so uncomfortable all the time. I've been to so many doctors and every single one tells me I have "IBS" or "You must just have more air in you than other people" or they tell me to take all of these pills, which I've already tried. I just wish I could find a doctor who would listen to me, REALLY LISTEN, and help me figure out what the cause of my distension is, instead if just throwing more pills at me and sending me on my way.

It doesnt make me feel more optimistic! Does your distension only come on after you eat? Mine is ALWAYS present, no matter if I have eaten or not. I could not eat for 2 days and it is still there, like Im pregnant. Have you had a colonoscopy or endoscopy? I am wondering if there is some kind of scan they can do to see what is actually in my stomach - whether it is fluid, fat, swollen muscle ... my colonoscopy said my bowels weren't really inflamed so I've ruled that out. Where do you live? I'm in Melbourne, Australia and there doesn't seem to be any real specialists around, I'm starting to wonder if I can go into a hospital but its more of an uncomfortable thing than urgent... I just don't know!!

  • I have had the same problems for the last several years. I was sent to a gastro and there found I had H. Pylori infection which turns out is more common than once thought. I feel much better since then, but the distension is horrible and there is constant pain now. I had an ultrasound done because they thought it could be my gallbladder and they said I have a fatty and enlarged liver and enlarged spleen. My appt. is next week to find out what that means and what comes next, but it definatley isn't what I expected because like you, it seems related to eating and is worse in the evening. I hardly eat anymore and can't lose weight, actually I continue to gain. Don't know if this helps but wanted to post just in case. Good luck!

I just don't know!!Hi again,It's hard to explain but the distension is almost always there. The only time it lets up is after I have a really thorough bowel movement, then I feel much better...but only until I eat or drink something again. I went to a new doctor this week and it was worse than ever, she practically kicked me out of her office! I'm sure you know, it is so hard to get a doctor to listen as soon as we start describing these symptoms. I don't want the doctor to just treat the symptoms but I want them to find the cause, I want to know why this is happening to me. I've looked online and I see there are other people who have this problem but no one can seem to get a diagnosis. After asking repeatedly I have been told the doctor "could" do an endoscopy or colonoscopy, but that they "probably wouldn't find anything". I would think, with all the technology they have today couldn't they just x-ray or scan us to get a better picture of what's going on in there? I live in the United States, on the east coast...and my mother works in healthcare and I STILL can't find a doctor to listen to me.I am wondering if it has anything to do with some kind of rare allergy, or swollen intestines...I am grasping at straws now just trying to think of what it could be.

WHen i wake up in the morning, my stomach is a fairly normal size (in fact, i don't have much fat there really) but as soon as i eat or drink something, however small, it distends to look like im really pregnant. Then throughout the day it gets bigger as i eat my meals. It does tend to go down overnight (which helps me know im not acutally pregnant) but its sooo annoying. I've been told its IBS and take medication to stop cramps etc. I've also been told to eat activia yoghurts but they are useless for me too. Have u found any treatment that has worked?

  • Hello to you all,I cannot help but feel sad reading this post as I am also a sufferer of this depressing, painful and embarrasing distension problem. Mine, like many of you have described is chronic distension that never goes away unless I stopp eating altogether. I have always been between 54 and 55 kgs until about 3 years ago I started to get this problem. As the distended stomach gets worse, my weight increases dramatically. In March this year I got back down to 53kgs, now 3 months later I am 10kgs heavier. Doctors! I have been to several mostly all will be infatuated with the "IBS" diagnosis which I am so tired of hearing because no IBS treatments ever work, I don't have constipation or diahorrae or a problem with gas. The only symptom is the distension. I have lower back pain from it pulling so much. I even had one doctor tell me that I am obsessing about it and I most likely just put on weight easy. I can't tell you how that felt because she more or less wiped away or the pain and embarrasment that I have felt.I have been tested for celiac disease, had a colonscopy and endoscopy, ultrasound both upper abdomen and pelvic but all to no avail. I am waiting for my appointment with the gasrto to discuss the results of the biopsies. I am convinced that it is some sort of fluid retention but like some of you have mentioned, I am tired of managing the sympstoms, I just want a diagnosis. Please let me know if any of you get a diagnosis as I am so embarrased and depressed at how my stomach looks and feels and none of my normal size clothes fit anymore!!Michelle

I can't deal with this anymore! I know what you mean about the doctors just dismissing our symptoms. I am constantly told that I: have IBS, have a nervous stomach, am stressed out, swallow air, it's all in my head, and one doctor told me "you just must have more air in you than other people". I swear, the doctors make it worse, they make me feel like I'm making it all up or I'm overreacting. It is hard, I can't go out with friends if food is involved because I don't want to look pregnant in public, I can't really go on trips, I can't wear the clothes I want to wear, I work out regularly and you can't even tell because I have this belly which will not go away...it used to be flatter in the mornings but now it's ONLY flat after I've had a complete bowel movement, and lately even that isn't working. I am hoping this new gastro will offer some kind of help but I'm worried he'll just tell me I have IBS and that "lots of people have it" and I just have to be less stressed out blah blah blah...I used to take Zelnorm and it was the miracle drug, it cured the bloat...but they took it away. I've been reading about a new drug which is very similar to Zelnorm but it's not available in the US, only in Europe. It's called Resolor...have you by any chance heard about it? I am trying to find more people who may have heard about it because it's hard to find information about it, but I think it might really help people in our situation. At this point I am beginning to feel so depressed and hopeless, but it is sort of comforting to know that at least I'm not totally alone.Alisha

It is so frustrating because the Dr's dont seem to realize how this condition is taking over our lives. I know what it feels like to be embarrassed to go out to dinner and to not have your own clothes fit anymore. I constantly feel fat even though I know that I'm not. Its also really ******n my boyfriend who can't say anything to help me so he gets angry and upset that I have to feel this way. I am so sick of having to manage the symptoms because doctors don't want to listen or spend enough time with you to truly figure it out. It was good to hear my GI tell me that I should never have been diagnosed with IBS. Yes I have heard the "most likely IBS" diagnosis many many times over the last few years. I have never tried Zelnorm or heard of the other drug you mention as doctors just constantly fob me off with trying things like mintec or IBS support etc etc. My stomach never goes down anymore unless I don't eat for a while. And its not just the distended stomach, its the increase in my actual weight as well. Have you noticed that your weight increases with your stomach size? This is why I am convinced it is not gas. I will be seeing my gastro for a second appointment tuesday week so I will let you know what we come up with. If my biopsies don't come back with anything, I am going to see if I can get a CT scan and as I am convinced it is fluid, see if he can test the fluid. Will update you with what we find (if anything :( ). In the meantime, I know there isn't anything anyone can say that will help you to feel less embarrassed, uncomfortable and if your like me, fat puffy and pudgy but please take comfort in the fact that you are not alone and not imagining it.Sympathies,Michelle

  • I've suffered from your same exact condition for 10 years.I've seen 7 gastroenterologists, 1 immunologist, 2 general practitioners, 1 gynecologist, 2 Chinese medicine practitioners and 1 endocrinologist. No cure, no answers, nothing. I've taken every test known to man. Every single avenue has been explored. Everything comes back normal. It's so, so difficult to believe.I've tried every single "solution" given to me, from things like increasing fiber, reducing fiber, peppermint pills, cutting out all sugar and dairy, to major exercise (even ran a marathon). I continue to gain weight when I was born naturally very thin with a superb metabolism...and I'm here to tell you that no one -- NO ONE -- eats healthier or exercises harder than me. It is beyond frustrating. I show doctors pictures of when my stomach is at its worst...and they're in awe, but they have no answers. The only thing that has ever taken the bloat down is a combo of Xanax and Prozac. You can try this, but I here to tell you that you're selling one problem for another. You will walk around in a fog for most of your days...and soon wonder if death is better. There are days I have no fight left to figure out the answer. This disorder has taken my best years (I'm 34). Socializing is extremely difficult when you're so distended and uncomfortable...and see other women wearing body-clinging dresses and look sexy and amazing with flat stomachs. I don't understand it. I just don't understand how no one can figure this all out. At least I'm not alone.

It is easier to know who is posting. H-Pylori is a cause of B12 deficiency. Have you ever been tested? Level should be no lower than 550. Doctors will tell you that 2 or 300 is borderline normal. Lower than 550 can cause neuro-psyciatric problems. B12 deficiency causes blood anemia also. Here is a link to look at. Check it out. Do not post there. Go to thread "B12 deficiency commonly misdiagnosed" here on this website. http://forums.wrongdiagnosis.com/showthread.php?t=62327Check out all the basics and the list of symptoms. You will be amazed at how much b12 covers.I have B12 deficiency, and my first symptom was bloating in my stomach, which ended up causing severe gastritis with every meal. I had symptoms from head to toe, because it was left unchecked. I hope you are still there to get this post. Get tested to rule B12 deficiency out.

  • Hi Hon,I was born fat, at 11lbs 12 oz.,,with a very distended abdomen, so much so that at the age of 11 I was sent by the school doctor for pregnancy testing. All of my life I have had this huge ball of belly stuck in front of me. Even when I dieted myself down from 13 stones to 9 stones, I had a skinny body and this great bloated balloon stuck out. I could never get boyfriends even though I was regarded as pretty, and now even at the age of 70, I appear to be in the final stages of pregnancy. I am SICK of being told to diet, even if I starved myself to death I would have this massive ugly huge protrusion bulging and swaying in front of me whatever I do. Doctors are totally useless; they say "take plenty of exercise"......I am severely disabled now through osteo arthritis and failed hip replacements, and now my spine is crumbling. How can go for a "nice brisk walk every morning" as some young moron with a stethoscope pronounced!!! I had gone to his surgery in a wheelchair!!!!!!!!! I can get no help, and this is going to kill me very soon, through no fault of my own. I live on a weighed and measured diet as I am diabetic on insulin, and have spent my life battling against suicidal depression because of this. 70 totally wasted years, and one whole life just thrown away.....help, anyone???
