I am extremely worried about my health and was wondering if you can help me. When I eat a meal, I can never finish because I feel I am going to choke on my food. It seems like the food is having a hard time going down the throat. After I swallow, I want to cough because it feels like my food cannot move downward. Another symptom that I have is my chest. I feel pain in my chest..especially in the upper left part of my chest above the left breast. I had a heart sonogram, EKG, and blood work done. It all came back normal.Occasionally, I have sharp sensation around my chest and sides of my ribs. Can someone please help? Yesterday I had a cup of coffee in the morning and realized that it seemed like my throat wanted to close up and I had chest pains. I have been experiencing these symptoms for about 8 months now.

  • Have a doctor give you a complete thyroid assessment. I was recently diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, and I also get chest pains. I also often feel like my throat is closing up, and at times, I even feel like I am going to swallow my tongue (even though I know that is not possible). Do an internet search for Hypothyroid, and just see if it matches what you are going through. Though, I do want to note that even though my doctor recognized my Hypothyroidism rather quickly, I have read others state that they have had trouble getting a proper diagnosis. I think maybe because thyroid levels can flucuate and what is normal for one person might not be normal for another. I think there are also circumstances when one of the thyroid hormone levels is actually normal, but the body doesn't convert it correctly, causing hypothyroid symptoms. So, if your symptoms do match hypothyroidism and your doctor says it is not, it might be worth getting a second opinion. Anyway, good luck to you!

  • Have you been tested for GERD? The symptoms seem right, including the issues with swallowing. And the fact that it was triggered by coffee (a common culprit) makes me wonder if you should see a GI doc...-Lou
