Let me start by saying Thank you for opeing this thread. I'll try to keep it short.

About a year ago my Dad started to show symptoms of acid reflex, he would wake up in the middle of the night with beathing problems (he would explain it as his throat would close) and the next day he wouldn't be able to swallow.

Sometimes everything is peachy and he can eat anything and everything, but in a ramdom pattern he sais he fells his esophagus close up and he can't even drink water. He says he swallows food but he can still feel it in his throat and he vomits it back up. He has had about 5 Doctors look at him and they all say acid reflux and prescribe different type of pills but none work.
He has had a little camera inserted down his mouth and has a DVD of it but they found no ulcers or tumors. All normal. Recently we were trying to see if it would be alergy related by trying to eliminate anything causing this reaction. We eliminated any thing containing citric acid, oilly foods, and anything spicy or with spices or ceasonings and nothing. It seems even simple water causes it. After some of the treatments prescribed to him he no longer wakes up in the middle of the night because he can't breath but he has lost about 70lbs because he goes 1-2 days that he can't eat.
We have been to about 4 doctors locally in Bakersfield, CA and we have been to 2 Doctors in Mexico (that supposedlly are know to be experts in this type of disorder)
Now we don't know what to do. My dad (stuborn) has resigned him self to being like this and every day he is worse and losing weight. (He weights 100lbs now) If you sufered this condition or have heard of such a thing Please Help!

Raise the head of his bed a few inches (ie. books under head).2. DO NOT eat anywhere near bedtime, preferably 2-3 hours later, small meal in evenings.CHeers,

It's terrible that drs sometimes fail us in this way...has anyone happened to check out the flap thing-(I think it's called epiglottis)in the throat that keeps things out of the lungs. There were a few people who were friends of friends or parents of friends who dies of the same thing. They all had the same symptoms, the feeling of things getting lodged in the throat, and throwing up, but actually things were getting inside the lungs! Really unbelievable stuff. I really hope things are ok. Good luck to you and yr father

  • Well, after another 4 doctors looking at my dad and to no avail......... we took him to the emergency room with a suspected hemorage of the head. (he was complaining of a severe headache, from vomiting) he was in the ER for 4 days and unable to eat. They notified a esophagus specialist that did and endoscopy. Turns out my Dads condition is Achalasia. They did a ballon dialation and he is able to eat again. lasted about a week he is going back for a nother one because he feels this throat about to close up again............ so he is all fine and dandy for now. but all this time with no diagnosis has left him soooo weak.... :( dam achalasia has a lot of missleading diagnosis leading to GERD and acid reflux. Thanks everyone for trying to help. ;)
