Am new here but decided it couldnt hurt to try as i am running out of ideas.
Back in November 2010 I started noticing i had trouble swallowing, especially noticed it at night. Not that it hurt to swallow, just that I wasnt able to, like it felt like my body didnt want to. Also felt like my tongue was out of place in my mouth, in the way of me swallowing. Once i woke up and felt like i couldnt breathe, like i was choking, so i went to the ER, they did nothing.
Also noticed was having what seemed like excess saliva or mucus in my mouth, along with (as crazy as it sounds) extreme dry mouth). It would be so much sometimes that I had to spit. It would gag and choke me, almost feeling like i was going to vomit once in awhile but didnt.
Made an appointment with my General Practicioner, he gave me Alprazolam for anxiety, said maybe it was acid reflux, and sent me for a Video Swallow Test. Test came back fine, mentioned maybe acid reflux.
Back to the GP, he sent me to a Gastroenteterologist. Gastro dr did an EGD (scope down the throat), he found a small hiatal hernia that he said was nothing to worry about, also found a small amount of esophagul erosion, treated it with meds (Dexilant, Carafate). And he stretched my esophagus. Said it might be acid reflux. Said to stay on a very bland diet.
Back to GP, he gave me Reglan (to reset my GI tract), this med made me somewhat better but the side effects were horrific so we stopped it.
Back to Gastro, told me to take prevacid over the counter once a day, that did nothing, so he changed it to twice a day. Then eventually writting a prescription for stronger Prevacid. (All in all, prevacid for 2 months and no better).
So this goes on for about 2 months, nothings better, still having symptoms. Gastro dr sends me to Ear, Nose & Throat dr, he finds nothing wrong. ENT & Gastro both decide i should take Robinol (for excess saliva), tried this but it made the dry mouth too much to bare so stopped. ENT recommended I go to the dentist to make sure there was nothing wrong orally, Dentist found nothing, only recommended i use Biotine paste & wash for the dry mouth.
I find my old GP (who i love) & go to him. He changes me from prevacid to Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) once a day & generic zantac (Ranitidine 300mg) twice a day.
Now it's April, I am no better, in fact I feel worse. Ive lost 40+ lbs, i barely eat (still eating the bland diet because im afraid), ony drinking water & an occassional Boost, still having choking/gagging episodes because of the mucus/saliva, spitting alot. It doesnt burn, i have no heartburn or pain, can sleep flat without problem. It doesnt hurt to swallow, just feel unable to sometimes.
Went back to Gastro 4/4/11, now they say they dont think its acid reflux but have no idea what it could be! (ive never thought it was acid reflux). They mentioned maybe Neurological? (this scares me because im not sure what that means).
I am so miserable, im hungry, i spend most days scared im going to choke. Still taking the Omeprazole & Ranitidine per doctor, and Alprazolam as needed (which seems to be more & more). Im so worried and am desperate for a diagnosis. Also, I've kept a daily journal of what i eat, drink, episodes, etc. There is no pattern or triggers that I can find.
Anyone else experience this, any suggestions? Please help!

I work around chemicals, and found the symtoms I have are the same as having Sulfur Dioxide Poisoning: over producing mucus, mucus ball, coughing, choking, tongue soars etc, my life is a living ***l, no social contact, bearly around friend and family, I don't know what to do. we need a miracle.

Interesting that someone has my same experience.I feel for you guys...I just started this sour tough stuff a few months ago, have been waking up in couging fits for over 2 years now. I was diagnosed with asthma. I went to the dr on Mon. because I have had 3 sore throats in 1 month. After 3-4 days of sour tongue, I get the sour throat and that lasts a few days. Then I cough hard for a few days and then it starts over again. The dr said the same thing...its acid reflux. So she put me on the general prevacid, have been doing it for 4 days and can't tell any dif. Actually its sore throat again tonight. I HATE IT. I can't even read stories to my kids because I start coughing so bad and can't quit. I can't eat out because EVERYTIME I eat, I cough. And this tongue flavor is driving me nuts. Its so sour and the only thing that calms it down is to eat something...so I feel like a walking pig at home!

  • First off i wanna know if you primarily breathe through your mouth, which can account for your dry mouth. Second is tongue position, Many people, well not many, many mouth breathers breathe obviously through their mouth, which causes they're tongue to get pushed down and back.Believe it or not, your tongue runs farther back down your throat than you may realize, and if you let your tongue lay flat and back, it just goes down your throat even more, which can cause gagging. Your tongue should be placed at the roof of your mouth at all times, especially when swallowing. It shouldn't just lay flat, which allows mucus and saliva to build up and run down the back of your throat, causing you to gag since your tongue isn't blocking your throat opening. Another helpful tip if your gagging on saliva is to raise your tongue to the roof of your mouth, mouth closed and don't force your tongue up, and raise it and let it relax...say the letter N to achieve proper placement, and if your saliva or mucus is consistently in your mouth, pretend your sucking on a candy and manipulate the saliva to the front of your mouth and either spit or swallow (wow this just sounds wrong now that i'm reading it). Try this and hopefully it can help. The reason the tongue can play a role in saliva production is because if it is laying down and back, your body will attempt to lubricate your throat with spit since your tongue is kind of blocking it, making your body think something is stuck and choking you. And mouth breathing will cause severe dry mouth, and then to compensate, your body will produce excess saliva. Best of luck. Just hit me up if you have any questions.

  • That's an easy one believe it or not. You have allergies (mold?) causing you to have postnasal drip. When you are prone the mucus backs up your throat which you eventually goes down the wrong pipe basically drowning you. Take something to dry it up...zirtec?

  • I am having an very similar experience and I am fearful and desperate. I have gone through almost the same medical merry go round with similar prescriptions. I see that you last posted it seems in the Spring of 2011. Did you learn any more about your condition or find a resolution? I am very, very interested to know. Please tell me. Thanks.
