I was misdiagnosed for 4 years with severe IBS, lost my job at a major medical insurance company, and am close to losing my mind if I don't find help soon. I have been to over 20 doctors over the last 5 years, only to find out my severe chronic digestive and bowel problems are somehow related to the Spina Bifida that I was diagnosed and operated on as a child, and have a Neurogenic bladder and bladder slight kidney damage. No one will address the horrible excruciating bowel pain and severe diarrhea, bleeding from the rectum and torture I have, that causes me to lose days off my life to work, family activities, parties, days where I can't be more than 5 feet away from the bathroom and suffer severe panic attacks and depression because of it. I have severe acid reflux and muscle spasms, back pain, and other symptoms. I need help, and I have lost my medical insurance when I got fired from my job.

  • Michele,I am so sorry for your pain. I have had IBS for a long time, but not as severe as yours. It sounds to me like you might have something more than IBS, like Crohn's or ulcerative colitis. Have they checked you? Some things that have helped me is taking probiotics like you find in yogurt. If you like yogurt, be sure to eat a few helpings each day. If not, you can take probiotic supplements orally a couple times a day, per directions. Also, chamomille tea can help calm the muscle spasms. Avoid spicy foods, caffeine, chocolate and alcohol, these can make it much worse. You've probably read all this before, but if not, maybe you can try to see if any of it helps. Make sure you check with you doctor before you start any supplements, though. You might also want to be checked for celiac disease which is an intolerance to foods with wheat gluten. Believe me, you find it in the weirdest places you'd never suspect. I had a friend who went on a gluten free diet and she improved 100% within months. I wish you all the best and hope you feel better soon.

  • I am so sorry you have to go through all of this. I know it sucks to not be able to get a Dr. to give to a diagnosis. I have IBS and for years was misdiagnosed as Lactose intolerant. (They finally did a lactose tolerance test and discovered I wasn't!) I just wanted to add to the list of things you should try to avoid when you have acid reflux (and this surprised me) along with chocolate, spicy foods, and caffeine you should avoid pepermint (and sometimes other mints). (I always thought it helped stomach upsets, but aparently it makes acid reflux worse.) I wish you the best of luck.
