Okay, I can't stand this anymore so I'm coming here for help.

I have had asthma and allergies since I was 12 and I'm 29 now (female). About 5 years ago I caught your typical chest cold. My asthma specialist said to keep taking my inhalers as normal, to take some expectorant if I needed to and if I was having a lot of trouble, to take the nebulizer to open up my lungs again.

Since I've had that cold, I can't stop coughing up phlegm. It's a constant cough that only stops when I sleep (it doesn't wake me up at night). The phlegm is usually clear but sometimes greenish and it's thick and stringy like (sorry for the gory details!).

I've talked to several asthma specialists, plus my family doctor. They have either upped my dosage of Advair temporarily, given me an inhaler called Q-Var or prescribed prednisone if it was bad enough. The prednisone keeps me from coughing but once I'm off it, the cough and phlegm come back again. Likewise with upping the dosage or trying the different inhaler. It works for about a month but then the cough and crap come back.

I am positively at my wit's end. I can't stand this anymore. Can anyone help?

  • Quick update -- Finally talked to a NEW doctor who almost did the same song and dance routine as the others, but decided to order a chest x-ray. Maybe I'll find out some results in a week, otherwise I get to go to a pulmonologist. • Please let me know what you found out. I have had the same thing for just about six years. I never even told my doctor because I was embarrassed. But, it has been getting worse, and I just can't stand it. I would love to hear what you found out. Thanks!

  • Wow. I'm so sorry you're going through this. When I first read your post, I thought you were going to say you had chronic post nasal drip. I've had it my whole life due to food and environmental allergies. Is it possible you have a severe, undiagnosed allergy that you may have developed when you got this horrible cold? I'd recommend supplementing you conventional treatment by making an appointment with a naturopath for an alternative second opinion. Natural medicine has worked wonders for me. Maybe this could help you too.

  • Hi! Please take this chest x-ray or a CT-Scan and a phelgm analysis. The phelgm that is being produced continuously can be due to Tuberclosis also. I have been through this and ignoring this to can lead to seriousness which we don't realise. I had similar phelgm being produced daily and cough for 7 to 8 month but never realised that it can be TB. Even doctors din't diagonis until one lung stoped working. Please get a PULMONOLGIST opinion. Don't rely on one pulmonologist if he says nothing is wrong at least take two doctors opinion or go to TB specialist. At least rule out these serious possibilities then u can sit quietly and leave it to your immune system.Hope for the best.Take careOkay, I can't stand this anymore so I'm coming here for help.I have had asthma and allergies since I was 12 and I'm 29 now (female). • hi!i suggest you visit like 2-3 doctors, i know that sounds ridiculous but different opinions will count. also, sputum cytology will help. you can ask your doctor about MRI or CT Scan if x-ray is doubtful. Remember, it has been years that you had been coughing with phlegm, long enough for you to suffer that.take care! About Lung Cancer Know more about how lung cancer slowly takes your life. Due to this he's unable to do his normal day to day activities and he can't even drive. He's done the CT scan, x ray etc but the doctors can not diagnose the condition or find out why this phlem is being produced in his lungs. He was using asthma pumps and since taking prednison his persistant caugh worsened. I am eagerly awaiting to find out the outcome of your result. Can anyone help him.
