For the last several years as I am falling asleep, I get a irritating cough. If I cover my nose with a thin cloth then I am able to sleep. Sometimes saliva gets inside the pharynx and I wake up coughing. What is this due to?

  • Well, covering your nose with a cloth will help keep the hot, and thus moist, air trapped underneath. It sounds like you just get dried out. Make sure you're drinking enough water during the day, try taking a bath or shower before bed, and consider putting a humidifier in your bedroom.
