My husband keeps getting hives all over his body and we can't figure out why. He's been to the doctors and they put him on steroids and benadryl and they go away, but as soon as he stops the steroids they come back. He also gets nausiated, tired, and his skin always feels hot. Anyone have any ideas of how to treat this or what could be causing this?????

  • You say all over, but where exactly are they? Okay, have him allergy tested for food. Could be wheat, nuts. What is he injesting? Pills, supplements? New detergent or soap your are using? Has the house been sprayed for termites or bugs? What's going on where he works. You need to eliminate the exposure to get a hold of this.

  • He isn't eating anything he doesn't normally eat. We have thought of everything we could think of but nothing is new. He gets the hives all over his body but they are worse on his arms, stomach, and back. His hands are really bothersome also. They swell up bad and really itch. He also says he just doesn't feel right cuz his body always feels hot even though it's not.

  • Well the problem may be with something he is eating, so I vote for food allergy testing. It might be shingles if it is one sided, you didn't say. You need to investigate the cause...what about cockroach dust or mold exposure?? Is he on any meds? MSG is just about in everything and hides under a variety of names, so read lables. I found this: http://dermatology.about.com/cs/hives/a/hivescause.htmives Caused by Ingestion or InhalationApproximately 70% of the time, what causes a case of hives cannot be determined. This list covers many of the common causes of hives, but is not exhaustive. These are things that you may want to consider cutting out if you have hives. Ingestion or InhalationWhen the source of hives can be determined, most cases are caused by ingestion of a substance. Drugs can suddenly cause hives even if the person has been taking them for years. Many foods or food additives can also cause hives suddenly, even in small amounts. I am including inhaled allergens under ingestion because these are foreign substances that are taken into the body. Anyone have any ideas of how to treat this or what could be causing this?????YES!!!! I had HIVES for 8 years and was totally mis-diagnosed. One day, my husband said "I want you to stop eating chicken, because they load the chickens with all kinds of hormones and junk". Four days later, my hives were gone!!!! Bottom line: I CAN eat Free-Range Chicken or Kosher or Natural Chicken, but NEVER restaurant chicken. I have been hive-free for 10 years!!!! Contact me at a1artgal@aol.com. Joan

  • Be aware that one can suddenly become allergic to something one was previously not with. So rule out anything new in ones life.. then rule out all your other exposures. Last time i got hives.. it turned out due to some dirt grit in my bed which i hadnt noticed before going to bed, (which wasnt like ordinary dirt but the grit from bitcimen/ashfelt). Lucky fixing the hives was just a matter of clean bedsheet.
