I'm constantly clearing my throat (like every minute or two). It feels like phlegm may be there, but it just doesn't go away. Here's what I have done:

-I've been to an ENT three times
-Got a barium swallow test (which was normal)
-Took some GERD medicine with no results for about three weeks (it was Prilosec)
-Took allergy medicine with no results (Claritin)
-Got at CT scan of my sinuses and neck that looked normal with no inflammation
-Got an ultrasound of my thyroid (which showed small 5 cm thyroid nodules but my doctor insists that this does not have any role with it because of the small size)
-Got a thyroid test with good result
-And now I'm getting a psychological evaluation to see if its due to anxiety

Any advice on what I should do next (it seems like a globus sensation but I have no clue) ? It may be anxiety but I'm trying to rule out any physical problems. Please help, this is stopping me from enjoying life. I really want a diagnosis for this.

  • Put some eucalyptus oil where you will inhale it each night, for example, on each end of the pillow. You most likely have a mild infection. This should clear it up.

  • Ive went thru the exact same thing.. tried GERD medicine, clartin, went to docs..After a bit of research on the web, I found that there is a natural cure for it... Apple Cider Vinegar. At first I was skepital, but after reading so many good reviews, I went to Whole Foods and picked up a bottle (make sure it says it has 'mother'). It cost me something like 3 dollars. Right before I had lunch, I mixed 2 tablespoons with about 8oz of room temp water and shot it with my nose closed. Trust me, close your nose, the stuff is nasty. Then chased it with some crystal lite I had in the fridge. And to my surprise, that back of the throat feeling did not come after I ate. I am on day 5 of this and it seems to be getting better every day. The apple cider vinegar does 2 in your stomach, it balances your pH levels with good acids and it tricks your body not to produce anymore bad acid that travels up your throat. What gets me is that doctors and medicine companies dont want you to know about this natural cure because they are making billions off of patients with this problem. Try it out. If it works, make sure to pass the info along to others

I really want a diagnosis for this. The only guess I can give is a chronic sinus infection, likely MRSA, which is hard to kill off. Unless you are a smoker, in which case quit and that will solve the phlegm.

  • Apple Cider vinegar is nasty stuff?? Try letting your Crystal lite warm to room temperature and see how nasty that stuff is. Its full of chemicals. You may begin to have more problems if you keep consuming that stuff.

  • Could be a rare side effect of a medication you're taking that has absolutely nothing to do with upper respiratory problems. Just one example: I have seen kids on ADHD meds and as an adult recently diagnosed with ADD and on meds I have developed a constant need to clear the throat, cough or some other mouth tic. It's similar to the need to clear or cough as with a cold or allergy, but oddly enough it subsides when lying down. Normally, when sick with a cold or if GERD is the culprit, the cough worsens at night. I had an MRI on sinus cavities, was scoped at an ENT and had the barium upper GI X-Rays to find out (thankfully) everything was in working order. There was a actually a rare side effect on the ADD meds that make me cough or clear. I chose to keep the side effect in exchange for being being able to concentrate for the first time in my life. Your pharmacist can review all the meds you're on and will probably be more familiar with rare side effects and the affects of combining them.
