Constant Shoulder Pain

For about a month now my right shoulder has been in constant pain. The muscle from my neck to my shoulder stays a little tender and a narrow portion of my bicep is a bit tender too with some stinging sensation. The pain seems really deep inside my shoulder and raidiates outward and sometimes hurts more as the day goes on. I have not had any injuries to my shoulder. No swelling or redness. When I relax my shoulder and let it fall it causes more discomfort. No one particular position seems to offer any relief.
I have been diagnosed with Gallbladder disease (which has to come out on June 10th) but the surgeon says that my gallbaldder should not be causing my shoulder pain.
I'm getting desperate for some relief! So far I have only been taking Advil (which does not seem to help). Anyone else with the same problems? What have you been doing to manage your pain?

  • I think you should call and see if you can get your gall bladder out right now! I had mine out in November, but for the week before, I had a pain in my right upper shoulder blade area that radiated outward. A pain you can hardly describe! It went away about four days after I had my gall bladder out & it never came back.

  • Have you had the shoulder Xrayed? Or had an ultrasound? There are so many things that could be causing the pain....bursitis, torn rotator cuff to name just two. The gb can, like MelanieMac said, cause pain up into the shoulder blade, but I don't think up into the shoulder joint and upper arm. If ibuprophen isn't working, have you considered another over the counter anti-inflammatory? Naproxen works for many, acetaminophen works for many. Maybe ask your pharmacist for a recommendation?

  • Hi, I had the same thing and then i went to my orthopaedic doc. He ordered an MRI and in my shoulder was a ball of calcium that had been there for years. If it was new it would be more wispy looking on the x-ray. But this was a white ball the size of a jelly bean. I thought that I had rotator cuff injury. Well too since there was pics only of the shoulder and not the shoulder blade and neck or other parts then we had to deal with that. I had him put some cortisone right in to that spot on my shoulder so that I could try to avoid surgery and so far it has helped a lot! I had done injections around that spot but not right in the spot. I can actually sleep without waking up every time I roll over now. It is very very painful and hurts to lift anything or reach above your head. TRY A TENNIS BALL ON THE WALL BETWEEN YOU AND THE WALL. you are in control of the pressure and it will hurt but it gives GREAT relief! That is a quick fix. Roll it on either side of your spine never directly on the spine. You have tender points and you will be surprised at all the spots that hurt in your body. The buttocks, shoulder blades, neck, etc. Use ARNICA gel or cream. Ask for it at Wal-mart or Rite-Aid or Target. It is $6-9 a tube but gives wonderful relief and does not smell like Ben Gay or the others do. It is a natural product and works GREAT for any pain in your body and lasts a long time. Too there are patches called Lidoderm as an RX from your doc. They are about 6x8 inches and are for an area that size. You can cut them or use 2 or more. They are good too but can be spendy if no insurance $200-300. Your MD should be able to do a few movements in their office to determine where it is stemming from then refer you to an ortho. IF you get it injected NOW istead of waiting like I did, then chances are you will not have to deal with it at all later on. If you wait, it could mean surgery.I have had injections in my thumb (can do only once and thank God it worked) my neck, shoulders, lower back series of 3. They beat the alternative of surgery! Good luck with that. It is hard to get an MRI auth'd unless you have insurance. They are about $2000.00 OUCH! But they tell it like it is! And if you do not want to do that try the injection. Injections can be done several times a year and are spaced at least a week apart. They begin to work in 3-5 days but they also shoot in some novacaine to help with the first day. They freeze the area first with a topical spray so it does not hurt so bad. When they did my shoulder I heard a very loud POP noise! That was the only time I ever experienced that. You need to find someone in your area that will do the injection for you either a rheumatologist or orthopaedist! God Bless Us All!

  • Three years ago I had terrible right shoulder pain. It lasted for months. I had every type of massage and therapy imaginable. Finally, I had a gall bladder attack in the middle of the night. I was admitted to the hospital and was scheduled to have gall-bladders surgery the following day. The pain has not been back since. I hope this helps.

What have you been doing to manage your pain? Some say it could be a stress thing causing it to me, or they'll say its something pinched in my back some where? Or possible Lymphnodes? Thyroid condition? Or a combo of many? This is what I do, Try & take it extra easy & peaceful with yourself esp. at night time. I always tended to hurt more at night then in the daytime~ I would use a heating pad on high for awhile & then later turn it down to med. but I'd put like some Icyhot or some type of ointment that would heat up on its own, & then put the heating pad over it too. Talk about instand temp. relief..OMG~....Ahhhhhhhh.....Too bad only temporary though...try this hopefully it'll getch some type of relief even if it is only for a short time? Good Luck~ :)

  • Did this ever get resolved? I sure would like to know because I have been suffering with the exact same symtoms for some time now exept on my left side. I had surgery 7 months ago for a SLAP tear and was already feeling this way before the surgery; I thought that when I recovered from surgery that these symtoms would cease. My shoulder moves around fine now but I still suffer from the same symtoms you described, with no sign of relief in sight. I see my ortho. doctor again in 3 days and will let him know whats happening but I really am starting to get desperate as NSAID's and PT does nothing for me. I discovored that drinking coffee sometimes helps a little so I drink it even though I'm not crazy about it. Please let me know what was/is wrong and if and how this got resolved. So far I am helpless and clueless as to what could be wrong with me. Thanks.
