I need some help, my 12 year old has had a very deep whooping like cough for 6 weeks. We have had him to the pediatrician 4 xs, no diagnosis, an internalist did blood work , tested for whooping cough and did chest xrays, no diagnosis. We went to a childrens respitory specialist and they are saying its not medical and are sending him to a child psychologist. They think its in his head. They call it a Psycogenic cough. He is continually coughing and says his throat hurts and is itchy. They think he is doing this because he has a mental issue that he can't talk about and this is how he is dealing with it. He is tired all the time and all of his muscles hurt. He has been on steroids..they said to stregthen his lungs, z-pac and Biaxin..just incase it was contatious...several different cough syrups, with no relief. Now my younger child has had a cough for a couple of weeks, initially diagnoised as strep throat, he completed all antibiodics and he is still coughing, although not as much as my oldest and its not as whoopy as a cough. I am very concerned and no one seems to know whats going on. Any suggestions would be appreciated.:)

  • They have referred your son to a psychologist because he has had a cough for 6 weeks!? They have banged him full of steroids and antibiotics (when it could well have been a viral infection) and now they say its psychogenic? I would keep your children away from these cookies. Sometimes coughs can take weeks to clear properly. It could be also that he has developed some kind of allergy. As for cough medicines, personally I have always found them to be useless. Try getting him to inhale menthol vapour (from crystals in hot water) or using a mentholated vapour rub.

  • Our daughter had similar issues with a night cough.1) We were recommended to get a steam vapouriser which we kept on overnight in her bedroom. It took a couple of weeks, but the cough went away. She has only had one episode since - again we used the steamer and this time it cleared up in a few days I would also be worth changing pillow / mattress / bedding in case it is dust / mould spore related.Good luck!
