Hello. I started off with a cough, probably just a cold or something. The cough lasted for 4 weeks, and thought nothing of it. Then all of the sudden my vision got very weird, almost like everything was flashing white. Then my lips started to swell and i got hives all over my body. After taking medicine, it eventually went away. Throughout the next week my vision randomly got slightly flashy for about thirty minutes, normally when i was laying down. So i went to the doctor.

The doctor thought that i was just alergic to something, which i am pretty sure i wasnt beings that i had come in contact with absolutly nothing new that day. So symptoms went away except for cough for about a week, and now the hives are back at least once a day. And on top of that, one of my left ribs has been hurting alot. The cough finally is subsiding and the rib pain finally going away after about a week, but im still getting these 'hives'.

These are different hives than i am used to though. It always starts out as slight itching on my ankle or knees. Then i will get huge red lumps on the inside of my wrists. Then usually a finger (typically thumb or pointer finger) will swell at the joints to the point that i cant bend it. I always have these bumps on my major joints, so knees, ankles, under wrists, knuckles and fingers, and elbows. The vision problem has stopped, but i know that this isnt an alergic reaction. When i look online i have found nothing until i found something called Chronic Myeloproliferative Disorder.

My little brother has a different blood disease (different father than me), and i have had most of the symptoms for Chronic Myeloproliferative Disorder. Yesterday i believe i had a urinary infection, as i kept peeing once every 10 minutes or so. I have not eaten since 8:00 pm yesterday, and it is now 3:30 pm the next day and i am not hungry at all, which is very strange because i normally eat at least 4 full meals a day being a hungry skinny college kid.

Any opinion is greatly appreciated, because my doctors refuse to believe its anything other than alergies. I know my body well enough to know that its more than that. Any advice would be great. Thank you.

Does the rash disappear if you take anti histamine? I am no expert but being on the joints sounds a bit like a blood disorder, rheumatoid? What blood tests has your doctor done so far, and are there any out of range results that may indicate where to start looking?Ian

Thank you. With the symptoms you described it is likely you are suffering from Dermatomyositis or Wegener's granulomatosis. Dermatomyositis is one of a group of muscle diseases known as the inflammatory myopathies, which are characterized by chronic muscle inflammation accompanied by muscle weakness. Wegener's granulamatosis is a form of vasculitis that affects the lungs, kidneys and other organs. Dermatomyositis is treated with corticosteroids, prednisone, and immunosuppresents. Wegener's is usually treated with prednisone and cyclophosamides. I highly doubt that this is a reaction or pneumonia. Pneumonia does not present itself in this way and if it was a reaction, a new irritant would have to have been introduced, but still would not explain the bladder infections. Dermatomyositis and Wegener's granulomatosis are the only conditions that fit your symptoms. You should get a bladder, urinary, and cystitis test, along with a physical exam, blood test, and muscle biopsy.
