For the past 6 months I have been clearing my throat of Phelm. I have only seen it white in color. I just recently had a physical and the doctor said to try taking benedryl and it should dry me up. I have not tried this yet but plan too shortly. Usually after I eat this gets worse and then levels back off. The daily clearing and coughing up during the day is really annoying but what really scares me is what happens at night.

Sometimes I will wake up usually early around 3:00 am and be gasping for my breath, and have a burning sensation in my throat like I just vomited or something.. It normally takes me about 30mins to recover, 1st catching my breath, and 2nd coughing up the phelm. I normally stay close to the toilet as it feels like I am going to vomit but I will usually while coughing burb up air. The episode at night has occurred about 4 times and I have noticed that maybe it could be linked to greasy foods.

1. Soup
2 Soup
3. Polish Kabaski
4.Meat with brown gravy

Does anyone have any insight on what could be the culprit?

  • Maybe you are having a symptom of acid reflux. Some people have a weak sphincter between the esophagus and the stomach which allows acid from the stomach to get into the esophagus. Untreated for a long time it can lead to dangerous changes in the esophagus, so it's not something to ignore.

  • Have you been tested for food allergies? Actually, you may even have a problem with sodium, from the foods you listed.

  • My first thought is allergies. But, if this is linked to certain foods, I would consider Cystic Fibrosis as a possibility. Cystic Fibrosis fits your symptoms very well. Without being able to examine you, and the limited information I have, I would say that you are suffering from Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common fatal genetic disease in the United States today. Cystic fibrosis is a hereditary disease affecting the exocrine (mucus) glands of the lungs, liver, pancreas, and intestines, causing progressive disability due to multisystem failure. I prefer to treat Cystic Fibrosis with Himalayan crystal salt. Symptoms of Cystic Fibrosis include thick sticky mucus, coughing, productive cough with thick mucus, and recurrent respiratory infections. It is important that you cough when you feel you need to cough. I also advice respiratory therapy, percussion treatment, and a flutter device. While Cystic Fibrosis is more likely, Shwachman-Diamond syndrome, Distal intestinal obstruction syndrome, Respiratory infection, and Infectious gastrointestinal disease could be possible. But, you should definately be tested for Cystic Fibrosis, and if negative, go down the list of the possibilities.
