Chronic Sore Throat

I have had a sore throat for 6 months. I do not smoke and am not exposed to any chemicals at my job. I have been on antibiotics, steriods, and now medicine for acid reflux. None of this is helping. Other than this problem, I have no health issues.

Can anyone help me figure out what is wrong? I have been to 2 GP's and 2 ENT's with no luck.

Thanks!

  • Have you been tested for CMV? Bet you it's your problem. Let me know.

  • I have had blood work done twice, with no unusual results. They tested for mono, but not CMV. I will ask my doctor about this. I am going back to the ENT this week. Thanks for your advice!

  • Because you have been on antibiotics you should rule out candida albicans overgrowth (yeast). It can set itself up in your esophagus and cause sore throats. I'm not sure how they check for this, but probably they can swab for it. I've seen photos online of candida in the esophagus and it can look pretty nasty. If you have a white coating on your tongue (thrush) this might support this.

  • One other thing you should consider looking into. Often the problem that gets misdiagnosed as acid reflux is actually too little stomach acid. So then people take antacids and actually make the problem worse instead of better. They keep taking the antacids but really they are prolonging the problem. My sister who is studying nutrition was telling me about this the other day. You may want to look into this as I don't remember the mechanics of how it works, but it made sense when she explained it. I guess Hydrochloric Acid supplements are what usually solves the problem. I am sure there is probably something online about it so that you can read about it yourself. She also mentioned that too little Hydrochloric acid in the stomach can create a condition where candida can grow in the body.

  • No viruses or yeast. The doctor switched my reflux meds to nighttime instead of daytime & it's helping. After 6 months of this - I have hope! Thanks to all who replied.

  • FYI: One of my various doctors, from 10 years ago, gave me a CMV test. I didn't even know that I'd had the test until 2005, when I requested a copy of my entire file. My CMV test was positive and the doctor didn't even say anything to me. It's believed to be one of those everyday infections that most people will acquire...along with Epstein Barr Virus. Although it may not be life threatening, it could cause a lot of other test to read false-negative or false-positive.Chicago
