I really need some guidance...I am 75 yr. old female with mainly unproductive cough since I feel in mid march and broke my hip. I was in hospital for 10 days having replacement surgery and have been hospitalized 2ce since with fluid retention problems. My lung xrays are clear. Drs. say my cough is not related to my body's retaining fluid and I am not on medication which would have cough side effects. I have been been checked out by my general practiciner several times, as well as an ENT physician, with no diagnosis for cough and nothing that has helped. I have tried over the counter cough and prescription remedies; even liquior and honey. Nothing seems to help...I am coughing all the time...day and nite...Also cough been treated for allergy, and upper respiratory orgin, but have not helped. I have chronic heart disease and renal disease, but both are managed at this time. I was in a nursing home rehab for 2 months recovering from the broken hip....I have coughed for approx 4 months now and am 'give out'. Any advice?

  • Are you taking an Ace Inhibitor drug? It is one possible cause of chronic cough. It is believed to stimulate the cough reflex.

  • Possibly a hospital-acquired (nosocomial) bacterial pneumonia. How long has it been since your last xray?

  • My dr. has checked my medications and I am not on any ACE inhibitors...my drt even double checked this too...My last chest xray was last WED. I have had xrays pretty regularly since my hospitalization. They have all been clear. I am about to go nuts with this...and so is my family listening to me. My dr. seems to think the cough is product of my working in cotton mill for 20+ yrs. combined with my fall/surgery and trama that my body has had to deal with since I fell. Dr is trying to treat it (unsuccessfully) with cough medications. I drink Robitussin like it is water, but know that is not good for me, so I am stopping that. I also take various inhailors and breathing tment. Thanks for trying to help me.

  • Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (look at CDC web-site) seems to affect people sooner, rather than later. If your xrays are clear, maybe it's a fungus. Mycobacteria etc.
