My son has been waking up in the middle of the night unable to breath. It's a very scary scene as he holds on to me for dear life with his eyes popping out of his head. We've been to the doctor a few times and gotten an xray. The xray came out ok and they gave us different versions of cough medicine and an inhaler. None of them worked. My son does not have a cough, cold, runny nose or anything like that though he has minor allergies. He is fine during the day and has been going to school. However at night, he chokes on phlegm that he cannot spit out. This can last for a scary while until he is able to clear his throat. I have not had a good night's sleep and have missed a lot of days at work since I don't know when I am gonna hear him gasping for air again. Please help!!! It's been 3 weeks!!!:(

  • There could be something in his bedroom that is an irritant, such as a feather pillow, dust mites, pets, mold, carbon monoxide leak (??)...I would try to track it down if this is the cause. Has he had allergy testing? Other wise, here is a list:http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/symptoms/phlegm_symptoms/causes.htm

  • It sounds like he might have chronic sinusitis and is choking on a postnasal drainage.Has he had sinus x-rays?He had a chest xray and throat as well and i was told that the results were fine. He was also being treated for a mild ear infection which he finished taking antibiotics for yesterday. Should I specifically ask for a sinus x-ray? Also I am planning to get a referral from our doctor to see an ear, mouth, throat specialist.

I have had a cold this week and did it twice. The most frustrating thing about this is that I have told doctors about this problem for years and they ignore me not undertanding how serious this is. I think I am going to die. Nothing helps, no cure, no one listens. I switched doctors recently and I heard him talking with the nurses laughing at my symptom as if I made it up. Then he comes in and says I am just short of breath when this happens because phlegm cannot cause choking. I assured him I was not breathing, but he still would not listen. What is up!? I need help and I have given up seeing any doctors.
