The only symptom I have is when I cough or sneeze (which is quickly breathing out) I have a very sharp stabbing pain about 1 inch below my right breast. The area is very sensitive to touch as well in about a 2 square inch area. There is no problem with deep breathing in or in moving my arms in any direction. I had no pain in doing exercises at the health club using machines to strengthen my top - I began going about a month ago and am using very light weights. I do have mild chronic cough for about the past 10 years. My bone scans show I do not have thin bones from disease. I am 60 years old female.

After a week there is no change in the pain. Doctor is guessing a muscle strain/pull. It is so painful I think a cracked rib but had no trauma. And general movement is fine. The pain is right above my liver, so wonder if anything else is going on.

  • sounds like you have a thoracic vertebrae that is slightly rotated which in turn means your rib has moved a little, often as a result of doing weights. SEE aphysical therapist or oeseopath to get deep massage a a slight manipulation. If you relax it normally clears itself in time. SEAN (IRELAND).

  • I am in pain all the time, I have been diagonised with FM. I also have insulin dependent diabetes, high BP, High Chol, Ovarian cysts, breast cysts (begien). My dr that diagonised the FM thinks that the pain in my rib cage is from the FM. If I twist a certain my I get a muscle spasam that brings me to my knees. And touching me from under my bust to my waist is not possible without so much pain. I was sent for a liver scan because of high liver emzymes and they had to stop the test, the pain was worse than natural childbirth. I was to there is no problem from what they were able to see. I also had a chest xray, normal result. I feel like Im getting no where with all the specialist I have gone to, this pain is at least 1 year. HELP!

  • I vote for a broken rib. Give it a month. I would not be exercising, however, at the gym. Try walking until it heals. When was your last bone scan and mammogram?
