My son was dignosed w/ a virus 12 days ago due to vomiting and diarrhea. It has now been going on for 12 days and he is now vomitting about 4 to 5 times a day and having diarrhea about 3 times a day. He has a history of acid reflux and takes previcid and axcid, and he is just recently been dignosised w/ being allergic to dairy.
He is a baby that rarely sleeps and today he has slept for about 10 hours. He is having wet diapers and I have given him jello and pedialite. He does have a cough and a runny nose. No blood in stools and his vomit is not green. He just turned 1 and he also has and enlarged heart and we follow a heart surgeon every 6 months to see if we will have to have open heart surgery. That is not all of his medical history but the rest has cleared up but my son has suffered enough and he is only 1. I have another apt. w/ GI spealialist tomorrow so we will se what they say. Any help please!!!!!!!

  • Hi Trish, So sorry that you are having to go though the worrying and pain that a sick baby brings. I have what they think is crohns disease and I was running to the bathroom 15-20 times a day when it first hit me. I had nausea and acid reflux as well. There are so many things that can cause these symptoms, and some of these diseases can be terribly hard to diagnose. I hope some answers come your way soon. I will keep you both in my prayers!

  • Okay, this is in all likelihood viral gastroenteritis and is typically caused by a rotovirus. The GI tract, particularly in children and infants, can become quite enflamed and gastroenteritis will exacerbate any existing hyperacidity. You're doing quite well to encourage consumption of the jello and pedialyte, but make certain not to use sugar in the jello because it will aggrevate the diarrhea. Viral invasion by a rotovirus usually resolves in about 7 to 10 days, with a number of cases persisting for several weeks and this is particularly so if the patient has pre-existing GI issues. I think your son will be just fine and due to his age, follow-up evaluation by your doctor would certainly be in order. Best regards, J Cottle, MD

  • Sounds a little like a virus of some sort. I think the most inportant part is keeping him hydrated, relieving any fever, and keeping in touch with your pediatrician. He/She knows your childs condition best. Also, use your motherly instincts and be persistent. I hope your baby feels better soon!
