 I had my thyroid testedby blood work up and that came out fine. Then I had a thyroid scan and it showed a goiter 1 cm. in size, but its not cancer or anything to worry about is what me dr said but why then is she sending me to get a biopsy ? The goiter use to be just a small node. I just dont understand why I would need a biopsy done ?
Could someone please enlighten me ? Thanks so much.

Thanks so much.Hi Dawn,It is great that the thing on your thyroid isn't bothering you. I had one for ten years (maybe more) that didn't. But eventually, it grew, and became a problem.Standard medical procedure, when someone has something growing inside, where it isn't supposed to be, is to biopsy it.Biopsy of a thyroid goiter is simple, but you need to know what to expect (wish someone had explained it to me before I went in!) They numb up the front of your neck, then go in with a hollow needle in a few different places, and pull out tiny little bits of the tissue in the nodule. The biopsy means they look at the tiny bits under a microscope, to see what kinds of cells are there. There may be only liquid. Or there may be fatty cells. Or there might be "pre-cancerous" cells, or they might not even know exactly what they found (happens in less than 1% of the cases, but happened to me, so I mention it).Knowing what is in that nodule helps the doctor know how closely you need to be followed. Maybe you only need to get it looked at once a year. But if they find something "iffy" then they may tell you to come back in a few months. For me, eventually they needed to take out my thyroid and nodules, and they were never cancer. There were a few reasons...one was the thing had gotten so large, it was pressing against my throat. One, was the last biopsy showed some strange cells that they didn't know what they were, so they didn't want to take any chances. In the end, when they took all that out (I had three different nodules, with different kinds of cells in each) I felt much better. Long story, but there must have been something in at least one of those nodules that was messing with my body chemistry. Two weeks after removal, things no one thought were related, magically cleared up.Here's the part I REALLY wish someone had told me about thyroid nodule biopsies: unless you have a high pain tolerance, and nothing stresses you out, having someone go into the front of your neck with a needle is STRESSFUL, and even with the topical numbing, it is still painful. The first time I did it I was in tears. The second time I did it, I took Valium first, and the experience was much more comfortable. Does all that answer your question?Best,Shula

  • Also, just to ease your mind a bit....... if it does happen to be cancer, thyroid cancer is 100% curable, even if it metastasizes. The whole process takes a couple months then you are cancer free...

  • Thank you for posting the update. That is so unfortunate that the doctor wasn't clear that you were there for the thyroid biopsy. At least it is over now.But now I'm confused. What kind of cancer are they looking for down your throat? If you have thyroid cancer (generally one of the most easily cured kind) that would be what the fine needle biopsy was for. What are the symptoms that are getting the doctor to look?Shula

  • Hi SHula ,my voice has changed and gotten raspy over the several months and a sharp pain in my ear.I thought it was due to the thyroid but he said you dont get ear pain from the thyroid ,so I get to look forward to getting a tube up my nose and down my throat in my next visit, whoopi. I will find out tues about the thyroid though,I'll let you know . He said it could be thyroiditis or hashimottos disease, but I still dont understand why it wouldnt show on my bloodwork ? It doesnt make sense to me.I'll get back to you after tues . Dawn

  • Well, for myself, I had all kinds of things growing on my thyroid, made my voice gravely, and started to bother my swallowing. But it never seemed to bother the actual workings of my thyroid.Good luck. And do let me know the results.Shula

  • On Fri 3-23-07 I was diagnosed with a "cyst" on my thyroid. I have experienced difficulty swallowing from time to time. The research I have done has led me to believe that they are rarely ever just a cyst and could be a goiter or a form of cancer. I'm off to the ENT Dr. today to see which path I'll be taking with all of this. The tip about the valium was good. I wouldn't have thought about that and more than likely I will also be having a biopsy done. mommy cat
